i am going to be picking up a 351 from a 95 truck pretty soon. it has low miles so a bottom end rebuild is not necassary right now, but my motor seems to be taking a dive on me prtty quickly, and rather than waste money on rebuilding this one i think i am going to go ahead and get the swap parts and throw that 351 in. my question is what kind of power can i make with the stock heads off a 351 motor. i will be using a trick flow intake and either an f- or x-cam as well as full exhaust and bolt ons. i realize the heads will be a big time bottleneck but is it possible to still make halfway descent power for what it will have, and be fun to drive? thanks

The block is really all you want to use. The heads, cam, intake, etc. need to be replaced for power makers. There are better cams out there for that motor other than the alphabet cams you mentioned. Keep in mind you may need to put a new hood on the car.

If you're planning on using the truck heads on a temporary basis, bear in mind that even though the 95 351W heads are probably the E7's, the valvesprings aren't going to be compatible with probably any cam you select. With an F or X cam, you'll definitely run into coil bind with the stock springs (stock 302 HO or 351 truck springs), and more importantly, piston to valve clearance issues. The F cam, with .512 lift may clear the stock pistons, but chances are you'll need more relief for the X's .542 lift. With valvetrain matched to the cam you select, and ported E7 heads, you could put down some respectable numbers for using stock parts, and I'd probably guess in the neighborhood of 250ish RWHP if the heads were to be ported and matched to the intake and exhaust. While definitely not in AFR/TFS territory, you'd probably feel quite a difference in SOTP performance just based on the increase in torque using the 351. VibrantRedGT is correct that you'll need to replace several parts, but to his list, I'd also add a larger fuel pump and injectors to compensate for the larger displacement and fuel requirements of the 351. In my opinion, and this is just my opinion, a 302 based stroker might end up being a more cost effective route to go on a budget, because you'd be able to retain all of your stock parts, and not inherit the unexpected costs associated with the 351 swap. A 331/347 stroker kit can be had pretty cheaply these days, using quality parts, and you can do away with using a cowl hood of some sort to compensate for the added height of the 351. I'm in no way trying to steer you away from going 351 because if I could afford to, I'd have one myself, but I'm personally all about simplicity these days, and I'd much rather avoid the issues that can be had with swaps. I'm just looking to give you some more options as taking on projects like these are already a painstaking process to begin with. Whichever route you decide, I wish you luck :nice:

This is how mine started lol. Ok first off if your trick flow intake is a 5.0 it wont fit because of the taller 351 deck. And if you put low performance cyl heads on a 351 your going to get low performance out of them. Try looking for a set of world or dart iron sr heads at least. They can be found for $500. Whats your plans on exhaust? There are very limited choices for our years of car.
