would this be feasable for a streetcar? would i lose a lot of chassis rigidy? are they prone to cracking the paint or warping? i can pick one up for 150 bucks.

I have the same questions. I need to replace my hatch because of a little rust starting on the pinch weld on the rear of it. I don't want to invest into another steel one because I know eventually it will rust again due to the poor factory design to let water escape. But, no one on this site has any REAL experiance with them. Only their opinions... And you know opinons are like ass holes............

I have a fibreglass hatch on my car. The fitment was a little bit of a pain. I also installed lexan glass into it because i could not or did not want to try putting real glass in it. One not so nice thing bout em is you need a prob rod to hold it up because the shocks are 2 strong than they would bust the fibreglass. They don't seal aswell or basically at all like the metal hatch. At high speeds wind does whistle in. My car is a daily driver but isn't. (as if that makes any sense) A cruising car or if i'm stuck ill drive it to work or the store. Make sure before you paint them you need to prime car all one color or the fiberglass will come up a lighter shade. thats about all i have to say about that.

Wow! Some real insight into this subject. Thanks for the info. I didn't think about the shocks. I figured it would be a pain to fit. I'll have to look into a nice steel one then and just hope it doesn't rust.

i wonder if some old, slightly weak, hatch shocks would work
also someone (percy's maybe?) makes speedglass...lighter than glass but curved correctly, rather than the flat lexan.

I will give you guys a secret on the fiberglass hatch. I work on a lot of kit cars and corvettes and on the mustang hatch what I have done is install the backglass molding clips then inject the frame with liquid insulation foam. You add strength and it gives it a rigid base so it does not lift when driving or hold water if the rear wing leaks.
