I know that these models are cheaper and that is what I need right now. What is the best to get...i know there is the saleen and cobra model. I like the looks of the saleen but i don't know if it performs as well as the cobra..if someone could shed a little light on the subject, that would be stupendous.

The 2V's were pretty weak those years. Im also considering going back to the 96-98 4.6's, but I'd ONLY go DOHC!

my favorite out of those years is the 95 with the 5.0 in it. I wanted to get that year but i ended up buying 99+ because my last car was stolen. I think i'll eventually get one as a project car. I love that bodystyle and the 5.0 Plus it seems like they are pretty cheap to mod compared to my new car. Just a thought

Yeah, 94-95 is the best year. You get the luxury of the sn95 interior, plus the power of the 5.0. You can't go wrong with that.

I had a 95 Cobra. Awesome car! It was severly underrated at 240hp and 285 tq. It was a blast to drive. It had the 5.0 motor. No probs with it whatsoever.

get a 94/95 gt or cobra if your looking to do some mods to it, modding a 302 is a lot easier and cheaper

Do you really think so? Honestly, ther're amongst the slowest year Cobra's going. Couldn't crack 13's to save it's life. Not taking away from the rest of the car, but a powerhouse, it was not.

i bought a 96 back in feb and have had nothing but problems. be careful about buying a 96 cause it the first year of the 4.6. it does run good i'm guessing. it is my first sports car. i love the v8 and power it has but i've driven a 1999 and a 2004 and would definitly prefer one of those. i know the 5.0 is cheaper to mod but the 4.6 has a lot of potential. i just warn to be prepared to spend some money on an older high mileage car. good luck. hope you get a good deal.

Contrary to almost every post on this thread, I own a '96 GT and haven't had one single major problem with it... Also, being a modular engine, it can take much more horsepower on the short block than a 5.0 can... There is definately not much difference in pricing to make the 4.6 fast.

O I definately believe so. When comparing to the GT of the same year (rated 225), with only 15 hp less. You gotta think about it: Cobra intake, different cam, 24lb injectors instead of 19...and a few more things. How are you gonna tell me it is only 15 more hp at the fly than a GT of that year? I never dynoed it, but when driving a supposedly 225 hp GT and my 240 hp Cobra, it was night and day. It also responded great to just an off road h-pipe.

I definately don't call it fast by modern Cobra standards, as it was most definately not...but that wasn't the question anyway. I also know that it is not a 4v, which is the cars you are comparing it to. Lastly, it does not carry a price tag much higher than a GT of the same year.

Alls I was saying is that it is basically a good buy and car for the money!! and i loved that car. It smoked many cars, and it was fun to drive...that's all.

How would you compare the 95 and your 01?

Oh man, that's a tough one!! They are really hard to compare, since my 01 is auto and the 95 was a stick...

I guess I would have to say that they are totally different beasts. The 5.0 motor and the 4.6 one feel really different to me. The Cobra was great in that at really low rpms it would really snap you back in your seats. But, it would start runnin out of steam up high. The 01 doesnt kick me as much down low, but it starts smokin up higher. I really like the feel of both of the cars, and would happily take either. However, I'm hoping that a KB can help me out down low and give me that kick I was looking for.

But i really gotta mention, my friend had a 95 GT, and it didn't pull quite the same down low. It felt like a combo of my Cobra and the modular motor...slower though, obviously. I hope this makes sense.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not downing your car. I was just touching on the fact that it could have easily been made so much better had Ford not been so concerned about playing the numbers game with the transition of the Fox/SN-95 chassis. FWIW, the GT of the same year was actually Ford rated at 215hp, not 225hp, due to the lower profile, more restrictive T-Bird intake manifold and a couple of other small odds and ends. The problem with the Cobra is that although it’s chalked full of go fast goodies, it’s saddled with (although better than the stock for that year) a more restrictive version of the Cobra intake manifold that was introduced on the earlier Fox based Cobra, less than stellar profiles of the ’93 Thunderbird/Cougar camshaft and a computer that pulls timing and fuel like crazy under hard acceleration. Although I admit, they’re probably underrated a little, I wouldn’t bet it’s by more than about 20-25fwhp. These cars would have pulled a lot harder from the factory had they been saddled with the stock GT cam and computer. Still an awesome car, it’s just that ford left a lot of room on the table for improvement power wise.

No, I totally agree with that...hell, how about throwing in the 93 Cobra Comp! I was just saying that they were underrated. I didn't think they were fast and like I said, by Cobra standards, they most definately were not.

Also, I didn't think you were downing my old 5.0, I just thought you misunderstood the point I was getting at. It's freaken' tough to convey any exact meaning over a forum!!

I definately like the looks of the 99-04 better but I will not be able to afford that and mods. I saw an ad in the back of MM&FF about a 97 Cobra and it was awesome looking. And with the mods he was running about 700HP to the rear. So I guess my question should be, is it possible to find a 97 Cobra under 10K? Thanks big time for the input...very helpful indeed
