I have a 91 302 H.O. in a 65 mustang. I have the 91 157tooth flywheel and the 65 bell housing. Should I use a 91 mustang starter or the 65 mustang starter? Please help.
First of all ,your fly wheel will have to be of the correct balance for the late model 302 .If you have a standard trany you will have to have a manual starter .If you have an automatic you will need an automatic starter ,the nose cones are different ,the manual is longer than the automatic. The starter will have to be a match for the bellhousing, and spacer plate ,and the fly wheel .
I have the standard 91 balanced flywheel to the 302, but I'm using the 65 bell housing and 65 3 speed standard. Was just wondering if I could even use that set up and what starter to use.
I have a '93 302 HO in my 66 with the 93 157 tooth flywheel and a made-for-1966 Lakewood scattershield. I initially ran a '66 starter and that would grind every time I started the car so I switched to a '93 starter and I haven't had an issue since. So lesson learned, match flywheel and starter.
If you have a 91 flywheel, then you need a 91 starter. I have a 93 5.0 engine, flywheel and clutch with a 66 scattershield and trans and, with a 66 starter installed, it ground excessively on every start attempt. Once I switched to a 91 starter everything was fine.
