Finding TDC on #1

I don't have a big breaker bar and socket to manual turn the crank, so I have to try to use the turn key short bursts to get to TDC. Only problem is, each time it comes around, I can't get it on the #1 cylinder. It will always land right in between 1 and 2.

Is that close enough as long as I mark exactly where it is and make sure it goes back in exactly like that? Or do I need to keep trying til I get it exact?

Never pulled the dizzy before... so lookin for a little help.

get it close to TDC (on the compression stroke!), then put the car in gear and roll it to where u need it.....?

how do i know its the compression stroke?

pull #1 plug out and feel for the pressure when your friend or father bumps it over slow

the compression stroke will force air OUT of the #1 plug hole. i just checked to make sure mine was on the compression stroke with my finger, and then rolled the car in gear to tdc, i was able to do it on my own. i parked on a slight slope to make it roll easier, but make sure to put blocks down so it cant get away from you if you do it this way!

If you plan on doing any half-serious work on this or any future car, you should invest in a breaker bar and half decent socket set.

It's not very expensive, it will last the rest of your life, and is 100x easier to get straight to TDC on the balancer without having to crank/bump your motor over a thousand times hoping to get lucky or rolling the car in gear.

Nothing will happen but when you stab the dizzy you will still have to have the engine at TDC on the compression stroke. no getting around it i dont think.
