ok i finally got everything put back together today and i go to fire it up and it wont.. i checked firing order and thats correct.. im sure its gettin fuel because i smell it after trying to start it a few times.. The only thing i can think of is when i dropped the dizzy in, i dont remember lookin to see if the balancer was on zero.. No way to tell now since i cranked it already.. neways.. Tell me what im doing wrong.. I pulled the dizzy out.. with a breaked bar i set the balancer on zero.. Then i install the dizzy?? well i tried and i cant get the dizzy back in.. it seems like the oil pump shaft is not standing up straight.. but i atleast got the dizzy to drop in a lil, but just not all the way in!! please help ;) thanks

Try turning the rotor a little and/or turning the motor over a hair with the breaker bar on the crank.

DO make sure you are on TCD on the compression stroke.

Good luck.

Did you install a new oil pump shaft?

I have found on the last two motor rebuilts I did for 94 -95 5.0's that the melting IM68 oil pump shafts has it's retaining clip about a 1/8" too high and the bottom of the distributor shaft bottoms out on it.

On the first case removed 1/8" from the bottom of the distributor shaft and it worked out fine. On the second one I was looking out for this issue during assemble and found it to be the same. I lower the retainer on the shaft by putting it in the vise and tapping the retainer's teeth with a screwdriver and a small hammer.

If this is your case also, I would force the distribuutor down, It would result in extra wear and play in the oil pump and/or in the distributor.

so i make sure the motor is on TDC by cranking intil i feel some air by putting my finger in the no. 1 spark plug hole.. then i crank it somemore til its around 10.. then drop the dizzy? or drop the dizzy when i feel the air comming out, around 0 on the balancer?

oh and one thing..the first time i stuck the distributor in it went right in.. now it wont go in for s h i t!!! so if i has that clip or watever that makes it too high then how did it go on with ease the first time?!

just make sure that the distributor has some end clearence when you do get it in. just went through this.. Advanced auto distb... gear, the pin hole was about an 1/8 inch off from where the stock one was, sheered two gears before we were all done. just some advice.

it wont go down anymore!
