well, my stock alternator decided to commit suicede last weekend, wouldnt charge at all, would barely keep the car running with lights, heater, stereo, etc off. i figured when better to upgrade than when a stock piece dies? so, off i went to get a 94 mustang alternator, a 175amp fuse, and some fat wire (i used 2gauge on mine, its what the parts store had on spool, i know most people use 4gauge, but sometimes i insist on overkill), also used some plastic tubing to keep the wire protected. i used the stock 94 pulley and a 1"longer belt to spin it. while i had the alt out, i decided to take the bracket off and give it a coat of paint, looks a lot cleaner in that corner of the engine bay now. getting 14.9v or so at idle and the voltage meter in the car barely dips to 14v with lights, heater fan and stereo on now. and just because i know

You will never ever miss that low output fire starting piece of crap that Ford put in their best selling car.

Nice work - mine will hopefully be done in a couple weeks too!
I can't stand it when I hit my power window button and my voltage drops down to 9ish volts. crapola

Word.

Stupidest thing Ford ever did to these cars was install that POS alternator. My last 5.0's alternator caught on fire while I was driving down the road. I was pissed.

Sometimes when I have my A/C cranked on high and I come to a stop, I turn it down a couple notches just so it doesn't drop so much voltage and kill the engine (happened once already).
I'll eventually convert to the 3G along with a high torque starter, but I got other things to buy first.

Very cool, did you get it from a junkyard? How much did everything cost you installed? I would like to do this upgrade pretty soon.

i actually got a remanufactured unit from advance and used the stocker as a core, the alt itself was ~$160, with all the little wiring bits (7' of 2gauge cable, ring terminals, fuse, tubing, a bit of heatshrink) totaling up to about $30. if i had to do it again, i would use 4gauge vs 2gauge as its cheaper and easier to route.

thinking about putting one in the truck (defintely would if i still towed with it), but the stocker seems to still be doing ok, it doesnt really ever dip too drastically, so it may wait a while.
