First MGW Shifter Review

*Move if needed, not sure where this goes*

From ModularFords:

WOW that's how I want to start out on this post. I just got the long anticipated MGW 05 Shifter installed. I wanted to share my first impressions. I wanted to start out by saying that this thing looks like it was designed for jet fighter or Rolls Royce it also looks like a master work of art. You wouldn’t think it was designed for a Mustang GT. It's just a beautiful piece of machinery. Now I've seen the Pro 5.0, Steeda Tri-Ax, and Hurst shifter and I have to say as far as the quality of the materials and the build it self, there is simply no comparison. It would be like comparing coals to diamonds. That's not a really fair comparison because some of the shifters are built differently but even compared to the Pro 5.0 which I think is the best out of that bunch supposed it just fails miserably when looking at them side by side. This is strictly on looking at the way the shifters are built and the quality of the parts they each use. The pictures really don't do it justice you will just have to see it for your self. Ok so on with my review:
1) The adjustability of this shifter is incredible. You can lengthen or shorten the throw itself in multiple ways to suit your needs. I adjusted it twice to dial in what was a comfortable setting to me and it's very easy to tune. There is an adjustable screw which connects to the transmission linkage which allows you to adjust the length of the throw. I have it set to about 12 turns out. It’s a fairly short throw at this setting. Then you can also adjust the length of the actual shifter which also adjusts the throw and the height of the shift knob.
2) The installation process took about 30-45 minutes it was very very quick. Very easy to install. We used a lift so it was even easier. If the car is on stands in your garage you will just have to raise it up so you can get your hands around the drive shaft and still be comfortable.
3) MGW uses two forms of sound deadening materials first is actually Dynamax sticky aluminum tape. This gets placed all around the opening inside and out. Then once the shifter is installed another 1/4" thick foam Dynamax sound absorbing material not sure what this is called but this goes around the shifter sealing it in the car. Ok, so what you might say. THIS IS HUGE. I'm not lying when I tell you it's much quieter in the car than the stock shifter while driving. I have a turbo in my car so it's pretty loud to start with. This alone makes a huge difference in interior noise levels. This was huge for me and it's something that none of the other after market shifters do. I bet that everyone will follow suit once they hear the difference.
4)I have tried just about every shifter on the market up till this point, not necessarily with an 05 but over the years I've had my fair share of shifters. I’ve owned 6 mustangs and I’ve had an after market shifter in all of them. Every single one of them transferred some sort of vibration or noise in the cockpit. NOT ANYMORE. I am truly amazed at how this shifter feels. Absolutely no NVH, NO VIBRATION, NO RATTLES of any kind. I couldn’t believe it. I'm not sure how they accomplish this but it's truly amazing.
5) I know with the Pro 5.0 shifter on our cars It needs to be broken in a bit. Putting the car into first and reverse is hard to engage for a while until it gets broken in. This for me was one of the reasons why I held out. The MGW does not require any sort of break in period what so ever. Shifting into first or reverse is as easy as shifting into 3rd or 4th. There is absolutely no break in period with the MGW shifter!
6) How does it feel? It's a little different. I've been driving with the stock shifter for 8 months now so it's definitely different in a good way. The shifts are very precise and deliberate. They just go where there supposed to. It doesn’t feel notchy. When you shift the engagement is solid, and feels very strong. There is no movement or wiggle play at all.
7) So how would I rate this compared to other shifters. Just no comparison. The amount of adjustability will account for just about every kind of driver. The sound deadening materials and lack of NVH is alone worth the price of the shifter.

Honestly comparing this shifter to any other is like comparing an Escort to a GT500. If you see one up close you will know what I'm talking about. You will probably think I'm full of it but I had pro 5.0, Hurst and Steeda Tri-Ax all sitting on the same bench and the MGW shifter is simply in a category all it's own.

Now my opinions are pretty strong and they are just that. I'm sure I'll get some nasty grams from the Pro 5.0 guys as I'm sure there very proud of their shifters, but you will just have to test one for your self. Is it worth the extra $50 LOL with out a doubt not even a question. If you’re concerned with noise or NVH in the car then it's a no brainier. This thing was way over engineered. It actually made the interior noise in my car noticeably quieter. In defense of the Pro 5.0 shifter I’ve driven one once it’s been broken in and it does feel awesome.

If anyone lives in Atlanta and wants to come check it out feel free to PM me. I'll also be at FFW I'll be hanging out with everyone and you can test it out then.

I’ve included some pics for you to gawk at.

Seems expensive but if it is as good as he is saying it might be worth it...I'll be waiting for more reviews.

MGW Review

GREAT Write up Hobo, Thanks a bunch-the pics were cool.
Did you mount with the new bushings, or did you re-use the old? Did you have to drop the front of the driveshaft?
Wow, you have got me salivating. Been waiting on this puppy since I got my '06 GT. I have to snicker at the post sometime back from the guy that works for Pro 5.0 when he said MGW's shifters were of lower quality and cheaper materials and were offered to those looking for a cheaper piece. I KNEW George didn't operate that way. There's one of these in my near future.

No shifter is worth 330, I wasn't happy I paid 259 for my Steeda. The write up seems fake if you ask me, I saw the guy posting on the other boards it screams fake imho. I'm sure it's great but lets not get over board, it's still a shifter and the guy has a turbo and worries about sound issues?

It's funny it sounds like your either jelous or you work for one of the other vendors. There is nothing fake about the shifter. Pictures and videos and other people's reviews speak for themselves. Ask anyone that's installed one of these and they will confirm my findings.

When I was talking about noise issue I was referring to NVH LOOK IT UP!

You wernt happy you paid $259 because that shifter isnt worth $259 made in china for $50. Ever hear the expression you get what you pay for????

If you dont think lowering your 1/4 mile runs by a least a 1/10 by shortning the throw by 40-50% Then your dumber than your post. No other shifter on the market can do this can yours? NOT! I challenge you to go find a cheaper mod that will lower your 1/4's runs for $330.

This cat is always posting ridiculous statements on the forum. I've got the shifter and there is no other in it's league......period. I know that I can easily shave a tenth of a sec. off of each shift with this thing compared to my Steeda Triax. That's a conservative estimate.

Geos, post on ModularFords is what prompted me to buy this shifter! I can tell you after seeing/installing the MGW shifter, the quality and engineering that went into this shifter are second to NONE! I have not owned any of the other shifters on the market, but I have driven friends cars that have had other shifters. And the MGW tops them all by leaps and bounds!!!

When I purchased my MGW I opted to wait for the poly-urethane bushings. So it took a little longer to get mine. However it was worth the wait!!! After installing my shifter last night (and already putting 150 mi. on the car) I could not believe the difference.

It is no secret now that there are two ways to adjust the throw on the MGW. One way is throught the handle and the other is through an adjusting screw on the bottom of the shifter. Out of everyone that I have talked to, that has this shifter, they all have relatively conservative adjustments. So to properly test this shifter to its limits... I adjusted the handle length its lowest setting, as well as turning the adjusting screw at the bottom of the shifter to its shortest setting (12 turns out--50% shorter). I also opted not to install shift stops as they are not needed or recomended.

The MGW shifter performed as promised! The dreaded speed shifting is no longer a problem. I have not missed third once ( and believe me, I have tried). Shifter feel is positive and stiff. No more "mash potato" feel while in gear. The MGW is really that good!!!

Now, my only bad experience. While removing the bolt in the load arm of the stock shifter I got my wrench stuck. My fault though, as I had been warning about this by geos/MGW. THIS IS IN NO WAY A DEFECT OF THE SHIFTER. It is lack of common sense on my part.

P.S. Call me a liar! Tell me that, your shifter is better/cheaper than mine! Go ahead, if that is what takes for you to sleep well at night. :p

MGW Shifter

The "New" price in the MGW shifter is: $295 for the shifter, $310 for shifter with shift stop kit (skip this option-not needed)-so we're talking $295.
The warning just tells you not to back the throw adjustment out over 12 turns. Adjustment range is 0 to 12 turns with 12 turns being the shortest throw, 50% of stock throw. :nice:

MGW gets another vote from me too, I installed this before heading out to the track last weekend and it made a big difference. It definately took some getting used to; everything is VERY precise... a big difference from stock and especially from the stock shifter on my Jetta :)

On top of the shifter quality, the installation video and instructions are 2nd to none!!! I think ANYONE could install this shifter with the pictures and descriptions they included.

My only "complaint" (if you want to call it that) is that the 3 - 2 downshift takes a little work. 1-2 and 3-4 are incredible easy and I haven't missed 3rd yet... the shifter just goes there. It's definately a change from stock, the movement take a little more pressure and decisiveness (perhaps I have something too tight?). My shifts aren't as effortless as the ones in the video.

I made that writeup on Modular Fords. Since mine was the first I used the original bushings. I've heard since then they have come out with thier own poly bushings. I havent bothered to swap them out. Car shifts just fine with the originals. One thing to note the shorter you adjust the throw of the arm the more pressure required or tighter feel you will get. Some people have noted that it's pretty hard to shift but that's only because they have it set to the shortest throw settings. The easiest adjustment is to play with the top mounted shifter lever the higher you set it the easier it will shift. A good combo that I've found is set the set screw on the bottom to six turns and set the top of the shifter arm to about half hieght. The best thing about this shifter is the amount of adjustibility. You can tweak this any number of ways. I would recommend you play with the settings and take some notes down and just play with it until you find something you like. I have to favorite settings one for regular daily driving and the other for racing at the strip.

I just installed my MGW shifter in my car. I have it set to the shortest throw and shortest handle height. I like it a lot this way. I would say it is a firm shift, but not hard. With the instructions you get with this shifter and the quality of this shifter, it is worth the extra $15.05 than the Steeda Tri-Ax.

I got my MGW gripper shifter today and installed it. Once this is installed there is no turning the shift knob as it has a nut that is tightened. I think it works really well with the MGW shifter...
