First time C-clip eliminator install

I just got my 33-spline C-clip eliminator/axle set from Moser with a spool. I understand everything that is involved and how it goes together, but shouldn't there be something in between where the actual eliminator and rear end housing meet? I know that the ends need to be cut off so that they are flush, but it just seems to me like there should be something there to prevent leaking. Is it just me? Or is this the way it is supposed to be? Thanks.

Thats the thing with eliminators,,they leak like a b@stard!!

You can use some type of gasket maker there, nothing wrong with that. Mine came with a paper gasket that I have between the two halves of the c-clip eliminators and then I have gasket-maker between the elims and the rear. No leaking on mine so far.

So you probably have the Strange eliminators. The Moser are one piece. I'm not too concerned about leaking that much, it just didn't seem right to me a guess to have metal on metal with nothing in between. Since they go to lengths to make sure everything is accurate and installed perfect then to slap it together metal to metal made me think it was missing something. One other question though since we're on the subject. I'm going to use the same gear set and do not plan on taking out the pinion gear. Do the spools generally come with the same dimensions as the stock posi unit? I want to try to do this without removing the pinion gear and correctly aligning the gears by just changing sizes of the carrier shims if possible.

I do have the Strange elims.

I have no idea on the setup -- I didn't do it myself.

Mine are Moser Brand (from about 2000) and when I installed, you weren't supposed to cut off the housing ends flush. The Eliminators had a recess cut in them that you were supposed to leave like 1/4" on the housing end which then would protrude into that recess. Maybe they've changed since then. I know with the Strange type you are supposed to cut off flush. I use RTV Ultra Black on them. They've been together for about 2 years since the last time I had it apart and no leaks.

You'll have to reshim the carrier but no worries with the pinion. It'll be fine. Install the carrier with the shims in their current locations and go from there. Just keep with the same overall total shim thickness to keep the same preload on your carrier bearings. You'll need an assortment of shims and a dial indicator with Mag Base. I like them set up with around .007 or .008 of backlash. Good luck with it.

Thanks for the help. It shouldn't be a problem. I just need to find where I can get a shim kit. I know they exist, but everywhere I have called in the past have no clue what I am talking about. I may just buy a variety of sizes. Advanced doesn't carry them. Maybe I'll go to Circuit City. They didn't have a basic memory upgrade for my comp that I was looking for, but they had K&N's. Haha, go figure.
