G'Day Guys.

3 weeks ago after much deliberation I fitted an E303 cam and as this cam still seems to generate a lot of threads I thought I would give my impressions.

But first off some important details. I don't have a Stang (I wish) but a 1991 4Runner but I fitted a HO 5 0 to it back in 1994.

The engine consists of

5.0
GT40 lower with custom upper
GT40X turbo swirl alloy heads
8.9 static compression
1.7 roller rockers
65mm TB
73mm MAF
Custom air intake
Custom headers
19lb injectors
E303
Supra R154 5 Speed

I also have a dash knob timing adjuster and use 40 degrees total advance with no issues, MAF airflow adjuster and an AEM wideband air/fuel ratio gauge.

By todays standards the E303 is generally regarded as old technology and after reading many threads here and elsewhere of problems some encountered and also being in a heavy 4wd this choice of cam probably seems odd.

Several issues guys had mentioned were loss of torque, idling problems and lack of vacuum and these did concern me, however there were reasons why I wanted to try it rather than a specific 4wd grind or the many others available and its now done, :D .

For whats its worth I did degree it and it came in perfectly on the stock straight up timing marks.

I did have a lot of concerns when I finally went for the first test drive but contrary to what I had read I don't have any major issues. It idles nicely at 650rpm, has heaps of brake vacuum and easily pulls overdrive at low speeds and my overdrive is 37% with 32" wheels. Although I'm not sure whether the actual "idle" suits a 4wd, :D

As far as performance goes the power increase was very noticeable. But what impressed me the most was it pulls strongly threw the entire rev range, which being in a 4wd is great rather than having a sudden surge of power at a set rev range. This was a frequent comment that guys seemed to mention about this cam and one of the reasons why I decided to try it. On my first test runs I was using 1.6 roller rockers but I have since fitted a set of 1.7's . Again I was expecting some issues but they are now permanent. The additional power increase with just this rocker change was amazing.

But a major factor was mpg as I do a lot of long runs etc so good mpg was essential to the extent that if it suffered the cam would have to come out. In addition it had to handle slow 4wd situations, especially soft sand beach runs. The previous HO cam advanced 4 degrees would easily idle threw soft sand in top gear as low as 800rpm.

So last weekend I did a 200 mile test run and I was amazed as although I tried to stay at the limit it was impossible, :D and it still came in at 22mpg so that issue was a definate pass.

The A/F ratio gauge was indicating a perfect 14.7 -14.9 while cruising so all is sweet.

I've only just got back from a beach run today and I'm really pleased. I tried idling threw soft sand in top gear and no problems at 1100rpm and above it pulled like a train. At 1000rpm and lower it probably would be OK but the cam started to hunt a tad but at 1100rpm its fine so no sweat and another pass, :D .

Next time I have course to remove the engine front etc I may consider advancing it 4 degrees but for the moment I am really happy with the E303 as it seems to suit my vehicle and combo nicely. For old technology it surprised me.

I will eventually run it on a dyno but if any guru's are able to give me an idea what this combo might produce it would be appreciated.

Congrats on everything turning out OK. Glad to see it worked for you.

For HP maybe somewhere between 230-270 depending on a lot of variables. Custom upper intake.....etc..

Let us know how it turned out.

Good Luck.
