So i'm going to do my floor pans tomorrow with the help of my neighbor. He's a professional welder apparently and he's gonna hook me up. Anyway, should i remove the gas tank for safety reasons or is there no relative threat of explosions?

I haven't heard anyone doing that- I didn't and lived to tell about it. You should have a fire extinguisher nearby in case the undercoating goes up. Also disconnect the battery.
The hardest part of floopans is making the new pans snug down to the frame rails- use alot of screws or bolts to crank them down to the rails and then remove them one by one and plug weld that hole.

Be careful of the fuel line underneath the floor (and brake line and emergency brake cable)
