flywheel - starter noise?

My 86 gt was making a kind of rattling noise from the starter while running, so I replaced the bendix yesterday(which was trashed) I put the starter back on, and when I started it the noise was there for a sec then went away. After about 200 yards of driving the noise came back! It is not as loud as it was, but does not sound good. Any ideas what else it could be??

Had the same problem on my 91 Stang... I had to shim the starter and the problem went away.

I sincerely hope that is it, but I have another stupid ?... how do I shim the starter? Do I need to buy a certain kind of shims?

I got my shims from NAPA you might want to check there. Good Luck

I checked with NAPA, the parts guy acted like I was a fool for wanting shims... he said I should replace the starter first.

i had a rattling noise coming from my starter on my drive home one day.....after about half an hour of intermetent rattling and grinding i heard a loud pop. got the car home shut it off look underneath and what do you know...my starter was sitting on the k-member. took my dads car to the store and got some new bolts and tightened that sucker down with all my strength. but that doesnt sound like your problem

I would try a different NAPA then, because that is where I got mine at. You can also check Autozone or Discount they might carry them as well. Sorry man was not trying to make you look foollish. I was just trying to help.
