For those that purchased a Multi-Spark Ignition to cure a problem.

What was the problem that you purchased the ignition system to cure?

What ignition system did you purchase?

Did the item you purchased solve your problem?

Did the item you purchased create any other problems?

If you could change something about the aftermarket ignition system you purchased, what would it be?
 
i originally bought a used MSD 6AL to keep more power to the plugs in able to run a bigger spark plug gap under blower pressure...

but now i use it because the cam's effects on the computer, lack of catalytic converters, bigger fuel pump, pressure and injectors all increase the fuel - causing it to run rich. So, i needed more spark to keep the plugs from fouling

it worked in both cases and i really liked it. I don't see a need for them in normal applications, but in the cases i listed above (forced induction or a poorly tuned or mismatched setup) they can be very helpful.

I have no complaints about the 6AL.
 
I was using an Accel 300+. I was using it to cure my ignition stumbling. It didn't fix anything, turned out one of the power wires for the computer had come loose. Then about 6 months later water made its way in the box and messed with the circuitry so when it got warm it would cut out completely. It was a big waste of $250 (it came with a new coil).
 
Couldn't tune nitrous the way I wanted.
I purchased my digital 6 box.
Yes it allowed me to adjust my timing retard function.
Yes my factory Tach would not work. I had to buy a tach adabter to fix that problem.
If I had to change something it would be that it would work with factory tach's. it seems silly to have to wire in another product to use factory equipped tach's.
 
I went with the MSD 6AL for a few reasons. First being the rev limiter, that in conjunction with my Tweecer, I have a very effective limiter, especially because at the time I was planning on spraying.

I also did it for a reason that I was wrong about. I figured, at the time, that the extra spark might help with some unresolved driveability issues. I know better now, but all in all with the 6AL and the Tweecer, I was able to get my car to run as smooth as a stock motor. Also, I knew that I would eventually be changing the motor and going turbo, so all those reasons combined to make it a smart purchace for me.....even though I don't really NEED the MSD with my current setup, I just hooked up my n02 and haven't sprayed yet.
 
I had a pinging problem, even at 11 degree's. Going up ever so slight hills where you just had to give it a "little" gas it would start to ping even with 93 octane. I bought the car in Sept 2003 with just 19,000 miles on it so it had to be sitting awhile.
So I bought a Screamin Demon Ign system. Didnt help! :( So when I was getting the heads swapped with a pair of Thumpers the problem revealed itself. On the top of the heads, and top of the pistons there was a "white fuzzy" type material. Im guessing it happened from low octane fuel and sitting around for a year or so.
After ignition in the combustion chamber this material would continue to burn after the explosion causing my pinging. The top of the pistons were cleaned and the new heads were put on and WOO-LA! Problem solved! :) I can run 15 degree's of timing without pinging! :banana:
 
I just bought a used accel setup, using the rev limiter on my setup with a supercharger is a bad idea?? More details please..........

Spark retarding on a supercharged application is easy to do incorrectly. You run the risk of detonating an unspent fuel mixture (compressed from boost) during a portion of the stroke where there should be no force applied to the top of the piston. Several revolutions against an ignition rev limiter will compound the problem.

The fuel rev limiter with A9X family of ECU's does NOT reduce fuel across the cylinders when the rev limit is reached. Instead, it CUTS fuel to every other cylinder. No fuel, no bang. That's the ideal method of running a rev limit for a boosted app.
