Ford mulling Mustang-based Lincoln coupe

http://www.leftlanenews.com/?p=165

Ford is considering building a Mustang-based Lincoln coupe, possibly in 2009, according to company insiders. The Lincoln would have a unique interior and exterior, mut it would share underpinnings with the Mustang.

No complaints on a mustang-based Lincoln coupe from me. It'd be like the Nissan 350Z vs. the Infinity G35. There are enough differences between the two (particularly the 2 seater vs. 4 seater) to differentiate them well. The Lincoln should be slower, more luxurious, and look considerably different from the stang. I could see them pulling it off well, I just wonder if they will.

I wonder what they would call a Lincoln Mustang and if they did another Mercury would they use the Capri name plate again?

Instead of a Lincoln based mustang, they should really revive the capri nameplate for mercury... That car line needs something to pull people into the showrooms.

I can't see a Lincoln based mustang... They have a hard enough time building enough of the Ford version.

Well, until they do, I'm just going to enjoy my '98 Mark VIII. It's a nice change
of pace when I dont' want to shift. I really like the plush leather seats too.
And she's only got 46K on the clock!

My grandfather had a '73 Lincoln Mark IV, they were great cars. I wouldn't mind a plush Lincoln mustang as long as they gave it a more powerful motor to make up for the extra weight (like a 5.0L or 5.4L or S/C 4.6). It doesn't need to be as fast as the stang, but if they don't make it pretty close it will die like the Thunderbird.

By the way, Merc already had a pony car. The Cougar. If they brought it back, made it RWD, and gave it a kick HP wise I bet it would sell like crazy. Maybe a S/C V6 for 250-275hp, stick it inbetween the V6 Stang and the V8 Stang.

Yeah, they could call it the Lincoln Stallion. Wouldnt mind seeing something like that come out of Lincoln. Some of the lastest offerings and upcoming vehicles are pretty stylish looking. Heck I wouldnt mind a GPS option and plush real leather seating in a stang. Put a little more fit an finish in the car and bring the price up a little. Not bad if you ask me. Like a more stylish more muscle 300C beater... That would put some umph in the Lincoln name. And make it ride on 20's...

Originally the Mustang was going to be based of the Lincoln LS, Jag S-type, 2 seat T-Bird platform D/EW-98.

However, D/EW-98 is so expensive to manufacture Ford can't even make a profit on the Lincoln LS let alone a lower priced Mustang.

So the 05 / 06 Mustang has its own platform S197, which per a HTT quote "was inspired by D/EW-98". IIRC there are less than 25 parts in common between the 05 / 06 Mustang and the Lincoln LS.
