I think all 5.0 H.O.s did besides '93. They switched over to hyper-bull**** pistons.

If lookin at late 92 model year motors, check those - the switch was made late in the 92 model-year run.

A crude but not definitive tell that people have mentioned before is that if the oil pan is black (originally), that indicates hypereutectic pistons. If the pan is grey, that indicates forged slugs.
People have found this to not be true at times, so dont rely on it by any means.

Crude Method, Yes, but very effective!!!

the 86 H.O.'s did not have notched forged pistons. which makes them a little different from the 87-92 forged piston H.O.'s.

I am rebuilding my motor this spring, and going carbed

I was planning on bumping up the compression to 10.0 to 1
and the full Eddy top end (heads, cam, intake, and carb)
with full exhaust.........but staying N/A, it will never be boosted

So would you build it with forged, or hypers?

I'd probably go hypers because they're lighter allowing for quicker revving capability. They should be fine as long as they don't sustain much detenation, which shouldn't be a problem on a N/A combo as long as you don't go 14:1 comp on pump gas of any stupid **** like that.

If you have the extra cash go with the Forged Pistons, if you are a little light in the wallet, then you should be able to get by on Hypers.

I'll probably go with the hypers, being there lighter, and it'll never go over 10.0 to 1 compression

if I have a few extra dollars i'll consider forged, but probably not
Maybe i'll go with sealed rings for the first to compression rings
