Found a 90 GT 25th Anni Tranny Questions?

Hey fellas (and ladies),

I found a 25th Anniversary Edition GT. It has smoked tails, cowl hood, flowmasters, cobra r's and I think a hypertech chip. New paint job w/ warranty... blah blah blah. He wants 3,500 (I forgot what the mileage was, but I'm going to look at it tomorrow or Sunday.) I've seen it many times around my road, and it sounds and looks beautiful. I believe it has black interior accented w/ red (anniversary stuff)

Problem: Transmission. He said the syncrhonizers were going which was making it grind once in a while. I was wondering how much it would costs to change them and while we had it opened to change the clutch and pressure plate etc.

How much would a ballpark price be and what is a good clutch/pp. I see a lot with KC but could you name some excellent choices.

Also I've done my fair share of reading and I'm about to do some more, but could you just list a few of the options the anniversary editions are suppose to have.

There is no such thing as a 25th Anniversary Mustang. All Mustangs from late March or early April 1989 to April 1990 had the 25 years dash plaque.

There is no real "Edition"..if he says that, then hes just telling you that as a selling technique. All Mustangs from april of 89-april of 90 where in the '25th' year of production, and recieved the new speedometer(140mph), with calibration...thats about it....IMO '89's are the best year to buy(DONT FLAME, Its My Opinion.)

(This is off topic of 5.0 but we have a 67 Msutang and a 67 Parts car w/ air conditioning. How much does the original Air condinitioning unit sell for? Not sure if we're going to sell it or stick it on our driver.)

Do all the gears grind? If so, it may be the clutch or something else. If the synchros do need to be changed, the kit is about $70. The entire rebuild kit is about $200. I think you would be better off using that if you have to take the tranny apart anyway. If you are not rebuilding it yourself, then you would have to add the cost of labor. There are a number of good clutches. Centerforce is usually considered one of the better names. Zoom and Ram are a few others.

Personally, I don't know if the car is worth it just because it sounds like the guy is trying to BS you about it. When you say the interior is black with red accent, what do you mean? If the interior is red with the exception of the top of the dash and a few other areas, it is the regular interior color. Usually that is not as desireable, but that is a matter of preference.

I don't know much about the price of the AC, but the 67 is popular right now because of people wanting to make Eleanor clones. Check Ebay and see if there are any for sale. You can also check the Classifieds on Corral.net and Stangnet to get more info.

Can't answer your transmission and clutch questions (other that saying I have the KC clutch and it's good enough for me), only a correction on the 140 MPH speedometer....

That appeared much earlier that the "25 years" badge on the dash. The 140 MPH speedometer appeared in early Oct. of '88 ('89 model year). So yes, all cars with the "25 year" badge had 140 MPH speedometers but they didn't just get them at the same time. Also, it was not the same speedometer that was in the '87-early '89 coupes with the Special Service Package (which had "certified calibration" speedometers). Just not sure what the above "with calibration..." comment was all about.
