Freeze Plug Questions

I recently rebuilt my block, and anyways I used a Clevite kit for all the plugs. When I installed them I also used a slight coat of Ultra Black silicone around the edges as suggested by a few people. Well I finally got to start her up and each and every one (6) leaks slowly, more like 'seeps'. Enough to make a wet spot on the driveway after 30 min running. Two I can see little drops form until they drip, the other four feel a little wet when I inspected them.

Questions are...How far should they be put into the block? I've got them about 1/16" below the hole's machined surface....

Should I use any silicone at all?

Do you think they will seal themselves up over time? ....far fetched...

I'd hate to pull the motor again, but if I have to.....$*!%

i did the same thing to my toyota..ultra black and brass plugs..and they dont leak, try tapping them a little if you can get the tools in there..

I thought about that...maybe they are a little crooked and aren't sealing, ...so tap the edge where it's leaking from I guess. I can only get to 2 of the 6, unless I lift the motor and remove the mounts.

Oh yeah and after 24 hours it only leaves a half-dollar size spot on the ground but thats without any pressure in the system...

You shouldn't put any silicone on them. All you do is grab a socket the same size as the plug, and hammer them in so they're pretty close to even with the block. Did all mine when i re-built it, none leak. Did you clean out the block where the frost plugs pop into with emery cloth or sandpaper? if not you should have which might be your problem.

I actually used a scotch brite pad which did the job. It was suggested by someone that builds motors that I can use some JB weld around the plugs and it will seal the leak as a longterm band-aid (read: mickey mouse). I guess I have decided to pull the motor again to redo all the plugs. I don't want to have any problems down the road ya know.

Any suggestions/pionters/steps on pullin the motor without the tranny?? I've only done it with it attached...
