My friend's 89GT (w/ 93 Cobra engine) broke down today on the highway. I haven't got all the details, but will update it when I get them.

He said he was driving and all of a sudden the engine started misfiring and oil pressure dropped. Then he tried to give it gas and nothing was happening, and he saw smoke. He is getting it towed to a shop.

Unfortunately at this moment this is all the info I have, and this is his daily driver, so he's in quite a jam.

Do you guys have any possible causes? similar situations?

Sounds like he blew a head gasket or something major broke.

Yea guess so. A bit of an update. He didn't hear any metal noises which is good. Backfire seems to have been out of the exhaust so I suspect a fuel issue. It could possibly be his fuel pump since it is stock and his car has ~ 150k miles. Anyway it's at the mechanics, so I can't really diagnose it.

Humm, I can't imagine smoke with a fuel pump going out. Was the smoke from the pipes or somewhere else ?

Sorry he was unclear with me earlier. The black smoke came from the exhaust pipes.

Black smoke sounds like a rich condition. But I suppose if he was getting intermittent firing for some reason there would be a lot of raw fuel getting pumped out. The oil pressure dropping sounds bad. Let us know what he finds out.
