A Friend of mine has a 5.4 L engine out of a 2001 f-150 pickup. The engine needs new rings and bearings. A few questions, will the engine bolt up with minor modifications, how much more horsepower does the engine make than a 97 4.6L, and how much would rings and bearings cost.
Thanks

Al Palpito is running a built 5.4 in his cobra, all motor running mid-low 10's.

It will definitely be an improvement since 96-98 4.6's weren't very strong because they were a new motor.

Thanks for the replys, but will the engine bolt up to my transsmission? I also thought that the 5.4 was wider than the 4.6...will the engine fit between my fenders w/out modification.

the 5.4L has an 8 bolt flywheel. it should connect to the manual transmission. the 5.4L is wider, but it will fit. you will however, need a new hood.

5.0 mustangs and super fords had a article where they did this swap. I think they went ahead with a tubular k member and had to modify some part of the body to give about an inch of clearance. other than that they were exstatic about the results.
what id do is that swap w/ side exaust. that would be killer.

New hood, custom intake manifold, mid-pipe will need to be widened, and I've heard you may need to bend some AC lines out of the way.

If if remember the article in the Mustang mag ..they had to machine a really trick intake adapeter that would allow the 4.6 intake to be bolted to the the 5.4 head...it was kinda unique... you know anyone with a big hulk of aluminun and some mad CNC skills?? ..I guess you could op for the truck intake and then swap out all the electronics...lots of decisions.

Again Thanks for the replys. So now I have this information, but I still don't know if I can do it. The question is would it be worth my money to invest in the 5.4, or would I be better off just going with 4.6? Would the intake for the truck not just bolt up, using my electronics off of my mustang. Its not a problem for me to swap motors, I have everything to do it. I just need to know exactly what I need to invest in to get the motor to run properly. IMO it would be pretty sweet to have a 5.4 under the hood, but the only question is would I wind up putting tons of money into it and never getting it right when I could have just done a P.I. headswap. Sorry this is kinda complicated, but can I please get some more input.

I honestly don't see that much money going into the actual swap. The 5.4 swap I saw and have in one of my Mustang mags sounded pretty straight forward aside from the slight amount of structual cutting they did to the hood to clear all the throtle cable stuff but this was on a 99+ so the hood might be a bigger issue for your SN95. The potential you have with the 5.4 is great so I would say it was defintely worth it. You could have an N/A faster 5.4 for cheaper than you coul dhave an N/A 4.6 IMO.

Go over to Corral.net and find the thread (6+ pages) about the 5.4L in the 97 cobra. Somewhere on the first page he gave a figure of $12,000 in parts alone. Granted this is a built motor with all the goodies, but if you want to do it right...
