Front Disc Brake Dust Shields

As the weather permits i've started stripping down the '95 GT spindles I bought this winter for my brother's '83 Mustang 5-lug conversion. Unfortunately the "dust shields" were heavily damaged beyond repair and I can now see they are riveted unlike the Fox units. Are you guys replacing them or just running the cars without them? It's going to be a street cruiser so it will see sunny days and likely no gravel roads(except the odd alleyway). Just wondering what everyone else has done in this position. Thanks.
 
I never put mine back on.

Are you getting alot of break dust on your suspension pieces? Being that the shield doesn't seem to protect the inside edge of the bearing as on the fox pieces my only concern is errant brake dust coating the insides of the fenderwell and suspension. I'm on the fence about putting them back on but they're only $20 a side at the dealer plus finding some similar rivets.
 
The dust shields help keep road debris (dead squirrels, large rocks and tree limbs) from getting stuck between the caliper and rotor when you run over them.

Try a Different Dealer as they should be cheaper than 20 bucks a side, IMHO I would use them as they also keep debris out.
 
I'll price out a set at another dealer, thanks for the tip. Did you guys rivet them back in or use a sheetmetal screw or something else? My main gripe is the rivets holding them on which was the only reason I considered not replacing them.
 
They are $8 each from the dealer.

Run them. They aren't really dust shields...they are SPLASH shields. They are to keep water off the rotors when you run through puddles. The right wheel tends to shoot water to the left rotor and vice versca.

They do NOT block any cooling at all. The rotors are cooled by air being pumped from the center outwards through the center vanes. That little peice of stamped steel isn't going to do a thing for your stopping distance if you leave it off.
