Front seats help!

Hi all,

I found some really nice '87 sport seats which appear to have been in storage for a long time. I want to install them in my car but they won't lock in the upright position, they just flop forward if you push them. Everything else works fine, and they are in generally excellent condition. A friend of mine told me that this is a common problem with these seats. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

its because they arent bolted down, so you cant fully get them laid back to "lock"

I bought my 88 new in 88, the seats have never locked "forward". They have a lever to adjust the recline/tilt but if you push them forward they move. I know this is differnt than most cars but I have never had a problem with mine.

I bought MY 88 new in 88 and can vouch for dgollem's statement. My car's seats have done the same thing since that first fateful day back in March 1988.

Im thinking he means you dont have to pull up the lever in the back to tilt the seats forward when someone goes back there. they move with out him having to do that.

Am I right Mondo?? or am I the one that is confused and not these 3 before me

sorry, i must have slipped into my 5th grade reading level yesterday. "the seats dont lock back, they just flop forward" my uncles car did that when it was new (89 GT) and mine is the same (89 GT vert). im pretty sure thats how they were made.

when i read it the first time, i took it as they didnt lock in place on the seat rails...

Haus is right, they won't lock in the upright position they will flop forward if pushed. They slide fine, and they recline and come back up when you move the lever on the seat bottom. The little lever on the seat back does nothing, and it's the same on both seats! This seems really unsafe to me. I have never seen seats that behave like this. Could this really be the way they were designed?

Ford did this in a lot of its cars, don't know why newer (SN95) cars don't have it. Anyway, the seat latches have an inertia mechanism just like the seat belt tensioners. If you come to a panic / abrupt stop or park on a significant incline, the seat will latch and you'll have to use the lever to move the seat forward.

Yes, they are supposed to be like that. In a sudden stop, they will latch and sometimes you need to use the lever to make them tilt forward.

Sn95 seats got rid of this and you need the lever to tilt the seat forward
