Front wheel bearing maintance

What is the purpose of that metal cage that surrounds the front spindle nuts?? How is it removed to to inspect the front wheel bearings? Putting Weld Drag Lites on, changing studs and would love to get to the wheel bearings while I am at it................Any help??

well you put a 32mm socket over it and take it off. Its part of the nut. Oh and to replace the bearings you will have to replace the hub its all one unit. I just took mine off yesterday and found this out.
