mustang/LS1 hybrid.......the daywalker but anyways, quick question since you guys seem informed, are cams and gears the mods that decrease the most mpg???

along with injectors or pulling out your 02 sensors

For the mods that most of us have 18 to 24mpg is not too shabby. Consider a car that I passed on the way home from work: Late 60's hardtop Charger RT, 440 V8. Now imagine what kind of gas mileage HE is getting , def. less than we get. If ya want decent gas mileage get a moped, crotch rocket or a 4 cyl. or better yet walk to work

what mod's have you people astuly put on your car and then tested to see how bad your milage droped. id like to know what to put on my car (to get better gas milage) mustangs are great famialy car they have a back seat they are not a sports car thats what make's it so cool to see a cobra walk all over vett's or a viper

Dunno about you people, but I like having a daily driver that gets better than 15mpg. I can normally get 22-23 in my daily commute and it's about 80 miles per day. It would sure suck with anything slower.

I'm sure my 4cyl gets worse milage than nearly any 4.6 here, but I mostly just drive it to the track or messing around on the street. No tune, 46lb injectors, non-overdrive automatic tranny, no O2 sensor (using a wideband to monitor actaul AFs) and I switched to E85 which has less energy and naturally gets worse milage. Should run a 12 next time I'm out to the track, but that has to wait till spring.

I have 500HP with stock heads, VT cams and turbos and get over 25MPG. 02laserred's car with heads/cams/blower gets 25MPG with 600HP. Other guys have 800HP and get the same milage as us with heads/cams/power adder.

Case closed, engine mods wont effect milage enough to worry about as long as the car is tuned properly. You know in all honesty my car gets better milage now than it did stock. AND ITS BEEN LIKE THAT FROM THE DAY I STARTED MODDING....ITS NEVER GOTTEN WORSE HIGHWAY/CRUIZING MILAGE THAN STOCK.

Like I said, the gears hurt my milage but engine mods (as a whole) helped. Cams being the only engine mod that took a LITTLE away...but the tune (vs factory) and my other mods easily outweighed what I lost....so I was still in the green.

wow, you really are stupid... at first I was hoping it was ignorance, but we have a full blown case of stupid. I said I was done until you prove you aren't half as ignorant as you have shown yourself to be so far. Obviously, that isn't a high standard to meet and you managed to show yourself to be a minimum of half as ignorant as you had thus far. If you were a little smarter, you could have realized you met the minimum 'half as ignorant' requirement instead of mocking me.

The really difficult thing online, is knowing who you are arguing with. At the Wendys, it is easy to figure out if someone is mentally handicapped, and it isn't right to argue with them. I wouldn't argue with them in person and I won't argue with them online. I regret that I didn't realize you were mentally handicapped much sooner...

The mod that hurts your mileage the most is your right foot. If you can keep it off of the floorboard you will find your mileage improves dramatically. The only mod that will by-itself cause your mileage to get worse is if you for some reason put a crappy tune on there. Anything else only increases the efficiency of the engine and will improve mileage.

But really, stop worrying about it or go buy a Honda...

Since no one else has bothered to help you, I will.

For each mod, you just need to consider if it makes the car/engine more efficient, or if you are adding a resistance or hurting efficiency in normal cruise rpms.

Mods that can hurt milage:
Gears, you are hurting efficiency by making the engine rev higher.
Blowers, it always takes extra power to spin a blower
Wider tires or heavier wheels, more rolling resistance and higher weight (minimal change)
Cams, generally hurt efficiency and power below 2500, where you spend most of your time in daily driving
Bigger fuel injectors, but if tuned properly these won't hurt you

Mods that don't change or even help milage:
freeing up the intake/exhaust, improves efficiency, can be measurable
turbochargers, these can definately add milage, look at previous posts in this thread
underdriver pulleys, less drag
weight reduction
porting, improves effiiency
a tune, more timing lets the engine be more efficient, ensuring the AFs are good before the O2s warm up.

You get the idea...

But you would be seriously amazed by the differnce in milage when you change your driving style. You can easily gain 3-4mpg by not riding the ass of the person in front of you, and short shifting. You can even keep your foot in it when you are short shifting. I'll often do a 1-3-5 or 2-4-5 shift pattern to keep the rpms down. Giving it more throttle from 1000-1800 rpm really is the best way to get to speed for milage.

My best milage was 27mpg, but I would get sick of driving like that and end up with 24-25. These days, I'm stuck in traffic too much, and doing to much city driving, so my milage sucks.. about 22.

It depends on your definition of sports car. I generally think a sports car has RWD, 2 seats, 2 doors and handles nicely. The mustang is lacking 2 of these, handling and 2 seats.

The mustang is a pony car, and not just any pony car but the origional.

Sports cars: 350Z, corvette, porsche boxster, audi TT

Camaro, BMW M3 and M5, Cadillac CTS V, S 65 AMG, Older Chargers, Cudas, Novas....I could go on for days about sports cars with back seats, and the older ones didn't handle with a ****! And the fact that a mustang has a backseat...or a sad excuse for one is negligible. That's the reason I took mine out, because its useless! By the way, the mustang handles more G's on the skipad than 75% of cars out there. Interesting how you get all of your information from wikipedia, a website unaccredited for use in any published paper in the world.

I dunno what the hell your talking about for wikipedia. That's just what comes to my mind as the 'true' definition of a sports car. However, by that definition, the Miata is a 'true' sports car too.

Given that, the definition of sports car varies wildly. However, I wouldn't call anything with 4 doors a sports car, regaurdless of how fast it is or how well it handles. I'd call it a performance sedan. I think sports cars should be light weight.

Really just depends on your idea of 'sports car', for whether the mustang fits or not! In general, yeah it is... but more preciously, I would say it isn't.

most of us are foretting that you will most likely lose gas milage, not because of HP, injector size, or mods, but bc the more power you have, the more tempting it is to push down on it.

Driving the car, shifting at 2grand or so for normal driving isnt really gonna effect a whole lot. Gears will cause more rpm's, therefore worse gas milage, but most blown or head/cam cars wont see too much difference if tuned and you can resist the urge to wind out the rpms. All our cars, regardless of mods, make similar power numbers under 2000rpms.
