So I am incredibly stupid when it comes to car stuff and apologize in advance for asking a dumb question, but...I am trying to replace the fuel filter in my 99 GT. The book says that the fuel filter is located under the passenger side seat, however, we have followed the lines all the way back to the gas tank and do not see a fuel filter anywhere..Can anyone tell me exactly where it is? Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

http://bullittarchive.com/1009.htm will help you out a bit.

Not a tough job to do but make it easier by having the right disconnect tool

If the book is saying it's under the passenger seat...throw that book out.

It's under the car in front of the gas tank. You'll need a flat-head screwdriver and a 5/16" fuel line disconnect tool as well as the new filter.

Please use a motorcraft filter. I've heard of guys having issues when using other brand parts store filters

Motorcraft FTW!! Frams have cause many people many problems. I usually un cap the gas cap before removal of fuel filter to alliviate some pressure. I don't think it mattes though, because I still get a bath in gas everytime!!

So true. Even relieving the fuel pressure and knowing some gas will spill out, I still get it on me. I don't know whether to or

Yeah, it's messy - but access to the fuel filter is great, so this, for me, is literally a ten minute job - and about 7 mins is cleaning up the mess.
As stated, you MUST have the fuel line disconnect tool - any decent auto parts store will be able to help you out.

Backflush the old filter when you are done.

I had tons of crud and dirt come out of mine. Granted i waited 54K miles to change it...but it was nasty!

I plan to replace my fuel filter when I take my car back out, in April. Could you guys tell me how to use the fuel line disconnect tool? Just general advice.

Thanks!
Matt

Darn fuel filters get gas everywhere! lol but yea buy Motorcraft. the disconnect tool is a metal circle that puts pressure against the inside of the line to allow you to take it off. You basically put pressure with the tool and sometimes spining it helps while gently pulling on the line.

This is the disconnect tool I use, and it works well.

To avoid gas in the eyes, I use a LPRU (liquid petrolium retention unit)
Better known as "wraping the filter with an old t-shirt"

Me too, but mine doesn't work so well. Guess I need to get the Steeda one.

It's a 5/16" spring lock tube.

I don't know what year they changed from the clips to the spring lock. Prob did it when they went to the returnless fuel system in 1999.
