Fuel gauge help!

My '67 coupe's fuel gauge doesn't work properly. The hand is usually on empty even on a full tank and sometimes it goes as far as half tank. WHat could be the problem and please help? thanks!

Take the wire off the fuel sender at the tank, and ground it to the frame. Have the key on and see if the gauge goes to full, that is if the tank is full. If it does, you need to replace the fuel sender on the tank. Drain the tank, and ground the tank. The outer ring unscrews and the thing come out.

yup do as he says, mine was empty on 1/2 tank i changed the sending unit and it solved the porblem..now i have 14mpg!! lol

I have a simmilar problem, any reccomendations on how to drain the tank?

Other than driving it until it runs out of gas

The tank should have a drain plug on it, mines on the passenger side.
Or you could siphon it out, but thats the nasty way

Yes, as I have been reminded of so many times, these cars are easy to work on. Remember to ground the tank, because you don't want a spark when you are tapping on the release ring. Vapors are many times more explosive than the actual fuel. KABOOM!!!

Pull the unit out and test it. If it is good, then the float is bad; they do leak and fill with with gas sometimes. You can replace the float with a sealed metal 35MM film canister. The whole cost is that of the cannister and the gasket. Wire it to the hanger. Hey, what can I say? I'm cheap!
