Fuel Guage,nowork,will,light,work?

Please, I need a tip, or an answer if one of you knowledgeable Stangers can help me, heh.
This is actually for a '95 Cougar, I'm hoping the gauge functionality is the same, or similar, it's a ford period so, maybe someone can help.

Anyways, here's what's what it's doing, quite simple. For the last three months, the gauge for some reason read about 1/4 of a tank high, all the time, and would move up or down going up or down hills, which I assume is normal, now, however, it stays way up past full, about half a tank past full! However, the "Check gauges" light doesn't come on. And I know for a fact that the check gauges light, does in fact work.

So basically I've been using basic math to keep from running out of fuel, but always using an extra half gallon. One thing tho, I travel about 80 miles per day with the car, and in the entire trip, usually once or twice, the gauge will come down, and reflect the actual gas in the car, but only to go back up way up again just seconds later.

Do the light and gauge work off the same device, or system, or can I still rely on the light even tho the gauge is off, cause the light seems to work, however I couldn't say for sure...?

'95 3.8 liter, 161k miles. It's actually a mercury cougar, but I'm assuming they're the same, my friends '95 V6 stang seems identical, the gauges functionality, not the engine. My cougar has a lot more torque than a '95 V6 Stang.

Thanks for any input, as my search really didn't lead to anything, I don't like starting new threads over such inept topics....however maybe some of you will understand. Thanks in advance.

Please, it's annoying!!

Does anyone read this forum? I'm being serious heh, I never have come in here before. Reason being is just that my cougar is a 3.8 and a '95 stang has the same, however I did some research and they are very, very different engines. I think they're both 3.8, and 232 cubs, and that's about all that's the same. However I'm sure ford uses the same concept for fuel guage etc etc.

So, I will take a mustang owner's word for now, so, does anyone know if a fuel light can still be accurate if a fuel guage has gone all....weird. However, now it works about 50% of the time, so it, has actually improved since the original post, 700 miles later. Plz, if anyone uses this forum and has an idea, post or PM or email, thanks alot.

[email protected] But realize, I live on this forum, so you can just post/PM.

Ehh, that's how it is on here lately.. everyone's real quiet. Must be the lack of summer. I don't know the answer to your question. If it were me, I'd take it to a dealership and have them look at it. Then you can sit in the waiting area and eat stale popcorn and watch a gardening show with the 80 year old woman who's hogging the 13 inch TV while waiting for an oil change. Can YOU think of a better way to spend an afternoon??
