Fuel pump hesitation after driving long distances on highway.

Well, it happened with me today. We just got back from Kansas City after going to Harrah's and blowing way too much money. Coming down from interstate speed (80ish) to a rest area... second gear... give it a little gas and it stumbled pretty bad. I know there is a TSB for this problem... But I will just fix it myself if it actually causes a problem. So that's my question. Does this mean the pump is going bad, or that it just might do this every so often...? As in, it's not going to fail eventually due to this problem.

Bad Fuel Pump

My Brother and I were taking a trip from Iowa to Tennessee in his 89 GT and we kept having these stalling problems when were on the interstate. The car would die and we would coast to the shoulder. Let it sit for a couple of minutes and the car would start right back up. This happened about 4 or 5 times on the way down. It seemed like it was ignition related, so when we got to our destination we replaced the coil, battery, and the ignition module. Anyway, we didn't have any problems with the car for two days and then on our return trip home the car acted up again, same as before. Then I suspected the fuel pump, so we always tried to keep the tank about 1/2 full. This seemed to help and we made it home and my brother got the fuel pump replaced and never had any other problems like that again.

So, to make a long story short, your fuel pump is probably going bad.

COMPLETELY different problem with the S197. If my car died a couple times then after a cool down started back up... I would have already replaced the fuel pump. This is a minor hesitation problem common on these cars.


I know others have had this problem... Where ya'll at?

I experienced this with my car too. So I printed out the TSB and took it to the dealer. They replaced my fuel pump with no questions. Definitely get it taken care of. Starving your engine of fuel is bad-bad-bad mojo.

Fuel pump TSB

Print out the TSB and take it to your dealer. Mine hesitated cause they could not "duplicate" the problem. Once the technician was in the car, I told him I wasn't taking him back till the car did it's thing. He was amazingly co-operative for almost being kidnapped. A highly recommend the Roush fuel pump if you have an authorized Roush dealer. I got the work done under warranty and only had to pay the price difference between stock and Roush pump. 10K+ and no more issues.

Cowtown, it's not throwing money away. Dawg's been through alot with mustang trouble recently. Rear end issues on his previous damn near gave him fits.

Rather than deal with the headaches of dis-proving all his aftermarket mods being the cause and eventually getting them to fix it, he is chosing to correct the problem on his own..

Fuel pump swap out on these cars is 30 minutes worth of work, all accessed from the back seat of the car. He would spend more time on the phone arguing about the mods, or pre-removing them to avoid the hassle.

Dawg, where was your fuel level at when it occurred?

If your on a long stretch and slow down without making a turn of any kind does the problem reproduce itself? Not the easiest to duplicate since most off ramps bend I know..

Have you had any of the fuel filling trouble that is common because of the split tank? It is a two way issue, filling to the far side and vise versa in drawing back to the pump on the pick up end..

Thank you Emay... Couldn't have said it better myself.

As far as the problem... It's the first time it's ever happened. I had right between 1/4 and 1/2. I can't duplicate the problem either. I did not turn when this happened, as the exit it in the middle of the interstate (toll road with a gas stations every 50 or so miles, and it's build in the middle of the interstate). It was a straight shot... slowed down... put it in second and gave it a little gas.. and it stumbled for just a split second... then was fine.

As far as the filling problem... Absolutely I have it. I have to turn the pump up-side-down to get it to fill all the way. Another problem that really doesn't bother me, so I just deal with it as it's not causing any mechanical problems... just annoying. And I know it being an 07, it has the "replacement" tank from the factory.

Nothing like the good ole' cannot duplicate trouble routine. With as much fuel as your stating you had it wouldn't be a sloshing or pick up problem, definately a mechanical hiccup.

I'd travel the path of replacement if it occurs again. Pumps are finnicky, like anything else one minute they can be fine, and the next minute out of service.

The good news is they made these cars simple to work on in regards to the pump.

Maybe do yourself a favor and go after a GT40 or focus pumps. Just swap it onto your hat assembly and your done.
