My gas tank is leaking around the sender. I thought it might be the rubber seal, but when I took it out, it looked good. I cleaned the mating surface, put everything back, and replaced the hose while I was at it, and it started leaking worse. I took it apart again and tried putting some RTV around the seal, but that didn't help either. None of the car parts stores carry the seal without having to get a new sender, and the Ford dealerships' computers don't go as far back as 77. I'm going to give Phil a call and see if he has some, but if not, do you have any ideas? Am I just going to have to get another sender?

Tell the lazy a$$ at the dealship to get out the micro film. They should have the data on film. I have the same type of lazy bastard here.
Are you sure the seal is leaking and not the sending unit where the tube is soldered, or where the wires go through.
The stock seal is square but an "o-ring" should work. See if you can match something up at a hardware store or something.

First, get your tube of RTV firmly in hand ... now look off in the distance, close your eyes and throw it as hard as you can.
Your off to a good start.
Did rust get between the sending unit and tank and deform the block cut O ring? If so the ring needs replaced, maybe.
Have you cleaned all mating surfaces to shiny metal and blended all pits?
Have you cleaned and inspected the tank and bung (sending unit assembly) for rust perferation?
How much did you damage the retention ring and tank flange during bung removal? I've noticed most people , when working on installed tanks with rotating retention rings tend to only work on the tab they can easily get to, thus moving the ring off to one side and preventing the ring from properly tightening or loosening.
The ring needs turned evenly.
Also, the tabs, wedges, ramps tend to get bent. They will need straightened. And cleaned.
Take a touch of grease and use it to hold the O ring in place, and lightly grease the retention ring, this wil help get the ring tightened evenly.

Telephone this place and get a brand new tank seal for your sending unit. You will have to phone their research office to get the correct part number then contact the sales staff. I purchased one several months ago for a couple dollars and had it within days.1badII said:
