I have a 98gt 5 speed with about 110k. After driving, I can smell fuel interrmittently in the drivers seat. I usually smell it near the back of the car. I just recently passed PA state insoection/emissions. The check engine light has not come on. My fuel mileage seems to be fine. Any ideas?

The most common cause of fuel leaks is the filler neck on the tank. Inspect that first. Do you notice any puddling on the ground when you pump gas?

No I haven't. I'll have to look out for that the next time I get gas. I work at a car dealer in service. I'll try and get it up in the air and check that out. Anything special I should look for?

Well, if you can get it on a lift just check the whole length of the fuel line. Maybe you pinched it with a jack or maybe there is a bad connection on the fuel filter.

updated info..need install help

Ok. I found the seal around the filler neck torn where the neck goes into the side of tank. I have purchased the seal and a new vent tube. Has anyone ever installed the seal where the neck goes into the tank? If so, can you provide some insight. Thanks!

It's very easy. Open the cover, you should see 4 little bolts holding the neck in place. If you remove those, you can pull the neck right out to get to the seal. Just buy a Haynes repair manual, it has everything you will ever need.
