I am in the process of replacing my fuel pump which took a dump last week. While I have the tank down I'm replacing the seals; fuel pump locking ring/seal and sending unit locking ring/seal. I am also replacing the fuel tank vapor valve grommet, but have no idea how to tell if the vapor valve itself needs to be replaced. It's a $50 part, so not something to just throw money at.

Is it similar to a PCV valve, where if it rattles when you shake it then it's still good?

Its basically a check valve, like the pcv. Just make sure it "checks" in one direction and you're good.

There's really no reason for them to fail, it's just a ball in a cage that goes up and seals the vent in the event of overpressurization or rollover. I say save the money unless it's damaged. Blow in the bottom of it to be sure, it should close up.

Sorry I am late to the discussion. Moving the canister to the inner fender well sounds like a great idea for space and cleaning up looks.
