Hello,

I have searched the forums for about 2 hours now and i cant come to a answer, Other than noise and some unstreetablity why cant you use a Full Spool on a NON Daily Driver?

My car is drove maybe 1 month out of the year if you count "drive time" and when i do drive it i usually go to the local drag strip and tear it up then cruise the local town for a couple of hours then bring her home where she sleeps for a few months then back out for another night of fun. I dont see no problem with installing a Full Spool...... So for my answer I came to the place I have learnt everything about Mustangs Stangnet.

STANGNET SCHOOL ME LOL :flag::SNSign:

Every time you turn, all four wheels must travel at slightly different speeds. A spool makes it impossible for the rear wheels to spin at different speeds, so the only way the car can complete the turn is if the rear tires scuff. This not only sounds bad and reduces your tires' life, it also puts a lot of stress on the axles and the rest of the driveline.

Flghtmstr1 explains the reason your shouldn't do it but for your situation, perhaps the downsides outweigh the benefits. You'll wear the tires faster, if you get caught on wet pavement every corner will be a new adventure etc etc but if you're really only driving the thing as you say you are then it's up to you to do the risk/benefit analysis and judge whether you can accept the downs for the ups the spool gives.

The question I have is this: Why do you need a spool? Are you talking about the 98 in your sig that ran 14-sec on N2O? Why not just use the limited slip in the car? If it's malfunctioning and you're getting straight-line one-wheel-peels, why not just fix it? Lots of cars are running down into the 11s (and faster?) using a limited slip -- factory or enhanced -- out back.

Yeah I agree. Not to sound like a "downer" but for your car there is no need for a full spool at the power level you are at. I have a friend that has a fully built blown GT that has a spool and 33 splines etc, but he likes to launch at 5k at the track.....so there is reasons behind his build. But for your powerlevel there is no real need for a full spool unless you got some series build for the future:shrug:

where I agree that you dont need one at your level... but I will speak from someone that has driven a spool on the street and not just what I read on the net

a spool is fine on street I have put over 10k miles and over 500 passes at the drag strip with mine and it is fine.. just take turns slower and thats all there is to it..

if you go with a spool get the 9in ends welded on to the rearend and dont use C-clip elims cause they will leak

Well I am putting my new motor in my car in about a month and the power levels will be alot more than my signature is now. The benefits in my case I do outweight the bad.

Soon To Go In

5.0 Stroker, Forged Crank, Forged H-Beams, Forged Pistons, Foxlake Heads, Trickflow Intake, Hitech Stage 2 NA Cams, NOS Direct Port Nitrous Kit (200hp), Flowtech L/T's Ceramic, and more

So I dont think I will be underpowered, I just dont know which way to go. With the Full Spool I wouldnt have to ever worry about it, as I would with the LSD or Loker

if your going to have the power and the car is a street/strip car... I would go with the spool...

I have driven my car in the rain and snow with it on M/T DRs annd it wasnt that bad but you do have to remember its there and take turns slower

My 88 runs low 12s with an OPEN differential.

Personally, I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend against driving a spool on the street. It may work for a little while, but will eventually break an axle. You are putting huge stress on the axles when the wheels can't spin at different speeds. If you are lucky, you won't hurt yourself or others when an axle decides to break. Get a properly working limited slip, or if you must get a locking differential of some sort. There are plenty of options without glueing the wheels together.

If i break a 31 spline Moser axle driving it around a month out of the year, I dont even want a car. I know everyone is against them I have been on this forum for 6 years, Heck i wouldnt have one ethier but for the power and as much as I drive the car i just dont see it being a problem. Not being mean bhuff30 you have been here forever and i really enjoy your post, but if it will break that easy then why not stay 28 spline stock diff?

The whole reason I am debating this is because my stocker is done fore so i need a new carrier, and i never drive the car. But when I do it is given pure hell lol

Thanks Guys Any More Suggestions On The Subject

Do it man I had a mini spool in a 72 stang and loved it. Drove it 2 years and diddn't go through a set of tires. If you are in a parking lot it will chirp the inside tire in a tight turn other than that nothing. In the wet if you get on it some in a tighter curve it will just spin both tire and slide out fun as hell if you ask me.

I just pulled the spool out of my car and put in an auburn diff instead. The spool is great on the track and helps keep the car straight but it just sucks to drive around with. As long as you are going fast you don't notice any difference but once you take a slow turn or try to park it sucks. I went thru a set of nitto drag radials in 3 months and only one trip to the track.

If its just a track car then its worth it if its a street car it's not worth it.

thats total BS... I put over 10k miles on my spool plus over 500 passes at the strip launching over 6k.. in the 12s then 11s and now 10s all on the same set of axles and spool

while a buddy of mine that went the other route with less power and same weight has gone thru 3 different diffs and 2 ring gears due to the carrier deflecting

if your going to put the time into drag racing you do it right or it will cost you more down the road

oh and you cant compare your 88 to a newer stang that has more weight and less torque meaning you have to launch a lot higher which in turn shocks the drivetrain hard which is what breaks gears, diffs and axles...

how did you go thru nittos that fast... i got 6k out of nittos and 4k out of M/Ts and thats street and strip with the spool

so out of the people that have posted in this thread how many have used a spool and not just reading what they see on the net

so far I see 2... me which i loved it and would never go back.... and one that doesnt but it sounds more like it was a DD or a every weekend car

heres what a spool can help with
