Funny thing happened on the way to work....

I've been doing reasearch on gears lately since I was planning on 4.10s being my next mod. Anyway, I saw a thread that gave RPM's @ 80 for 3.27's, 3.73's, and 4.10's so I thought I'd pay attention this morning. Low and behold I'm turning about 2500 @ 80mph and according to that thread that means I've got 3.73s...guess the previous owner did that but didn't document it...I always just assumed it had the stock gears.
So basically my question is should I still get 4.10s or just skip it and do cams now?

You think a no-talent jagoff like myself could do a cam install in an apt parking lot? Is there a "talk-to-me-like-I'm-five" how-to install with pics somewhere?

You are in deep doo doo then. :rlaugh:

Honestly, unless you find a hell of a deal, I think cams will disappoint you. IF you go big you will have idle issues...not that they can't be solved but you may wind up spending a lot of tune time getting them right. A smaller cam is fine but you are really only looking at 30HP max. It is a kick in the seat but that gain is small compared to the expense. Now if you have money to blow...DO IT.

Well what do you suggest? I'm not married to the cams idea I just figured it'd be the next logical step. If I wind up doing it I'd get stage 1's and if I didn't feel comfortable doing it (which I probably won't) I know a guy who would do it for a fair price so...what else is there to do?

I would say skip the cams. The following are the most beneficial mods and the ones you will see the most gains\performance improvements. If you want to get something now that will benefit you down the road then get a 75mm tb and plenum.

1. Gears 3.73 or 4.10s
2. Custom tune (93 or 91 oct.)
3. Exhaust
4. Suspension
5. Blower

It depends on your goals. You can get really good deals on used vortech setups, you just have to start looking. Dollar for dollar it will be the best bang for your buck. AND the car drives like stock when you dont mash the pedal- I get better gas mileage with my SC than my camed '00 did.

Eh, I just want a wicked daily driver. Think I'll stay N/A for the forseeable future. Guess I'll just take the money I was gonna spend on gears and get white face gauges, a new head unit, and a MGW shifter.

MGW:nice: , I have one and love it. If you have a Mach stereo make sure you get the little box where you adjust inputs from the stereo to the amps(can't remember what they call it). If not you can damage your factory amps.

If you already have a catback you could get a new mid pipe. X,H, catted or non-catted, prochamber. Something along that line. Or you could get some stickers! You know each sticker is good for at least 4 rwhp!:rlaugh:

Which thread was this?

If you can get a deal on installation go for it. Another suggestion is to keep an eye out for some used cams. I have a milder cam so you may not see too much of an increase from the PI cams but going with Stage 2's or Comp 270AH's would give you a kick and still remain drivable. I paid $325 for mine used and never had an issue.
