I had to replace my radiator because of a leak. While it was out I decided to replace the water pump as I'm preparing the car to install a supercharger and didn't want to rip everything off to get at the pump if it leaked later. While the old pump was off I decided to flush the block. I took the thermostat out, replaced the thermostat housing and placed the hose in the opening.
Soon water began to pour out of the two openings in the timing chain cover. So far so good.

Facing the engine, the opening on the right was flowing water about twice as much and twice as fast as the opening on the left. If I put the hose into the left opening, the right side flowed the same as when the hose was placed in the thermostat hole. When I placed the hose in the right hole in the timing chain cover the left flowed the same as before, about half of what the right side flowed. There is 60 pounds of water pressure coming out of the hose.

The car is an 89 LX that has has 70K miles on it and I’m the second owner. The first owner bought it new in 89 when he was 60 years old and the car is cherry. I've only driven it for about 800 miles since I got it and it has not had any overheating issues. A couple of months ago I replaced the 190 thermo with a 180 and the temperature gauge showed a drop.

Is the water flow that I'm describing normal for the 302 or am I facing a possible heat problem when I install the supercharger?

Thanks for any insight

Mike
