That's assuming you're running naturally aspirated of couse. If you're running any sort of power adder, I'd close the gap to around .035-.040 to prevent spark blow out.
i would gap at .052....my tbird has a 4.6 in it and when it was .056 i got alot of weird symptoms like you give it alittle gas above 20mph and it would hesitate for a second..
i took the plugs out, regapped at .052 (stock is .052-.056) and everything is fine. use autolite of motorcraft.

if using "copper" plugs, I'd recommend going to a .048 to .050. that way as the copper plugs electrode wears down and the gap gets wider, your still ok.
