Gas Cap

I mostly lurk in here, but this has been bothering me lately. Does anyone else worry about scratching their paint when refueling. It seem kinda odd to me that there isn't a place to hang the plastic gas cap, it just dangles there banging against the side of the car. Does any one have suggestions or fixes on how to keep the cap from doing this? Sorry if this is a repeat or misclassified, I searched the threads and couldn't find anything on this subject.

My informal thumbnail test tells me the cap is softer than the finish, so I'm not going to waste any worry on it.

If I was worried, I might be tempted to carry a microfiber polishing cloth (I do) and a rubber band (I didn't, but I might start, tomorrow), and capture that offending cap before it could wreak havoc on my fender.

I don't worry about scratching, as the Liberty I drove had a similar deal, so I'm used to it now, but what irks ME, is how the connector on my 07, won't lay correctly when I close the door. Want's to get caught in the door all the time. Do the billet doors come with a way of connecting the gas cap? Is it better than stock? I will say, the cap for the Mustang hangs closer to the body than the Jeep did.

I'm probably closing in on 100 times filling up my car in almost a year now(10 days away, but who's counting ). Anyways, I have yet to see any signs of damage from the gas cap contacting the fender.

The only reason I raised the question was because I've seen other new Ford vehicles with huge scratches on the fender from the gas cap.

I actually flip the cap over the gas door so it doesn't cause any scuffs. If you look at the tether you will see a U shaped design that is perfect for holding it to the fuel door.

I don't have a Mustang yet but I do worry about that with just my Nissan Frontier. I gently lay the cap aginst the fender when I open it up to refuel. It's a big concern of mine and you can bet I'll do the same thing if not more to prevent it on my Mustang when I buy!

I guess we could always just cut off the plastic piece holding it there and just set the cap down when you refuel.

Probably a little extreme, but definitely an option.

Or like on some cars, they had the lip on the backside of the door that held the cap. Probably could be made fairly simple if you do some homework.

i have thought about modifying my lid to accept the gascap. with a little structural adhesive, and a little cutting of a donor door, and it would be an easy fix. i just need to go to the wrecking yard to find a nice donor!!

Perhaps just a simple clip near the hinge(on the backside of the gas tank door)that the plastic "cord" could hang on...

a backyard engineering trick would be a paperclip bent to hang on the inner bracing, with a little tab to hang the cord on.
