moved from Mustang talk:

Hey guys, been looking through the forum for like problems like mine, but haven't really seen any. This seems to do it only when I fill up the tank. At first it will read full, then a few miles down road, i will look down it will read empty with low fuel light on. After a few moments, or restart, it will rise to normal. Seems to be working fine otherwise. It has never done it in the middle of the tank.

water in fuel maybe? (i may be thinking of aircraft fuel capacitance on this)

Is the light getting signal from guage itself or sending unit?

Thanks for any advice.

I have a similar problem, I start my car and the needle gives the correct ammount of gas and after driving around for a bit the needle goes off the meter and is way above Full, you cant even see it - i dunno why it does that

My *cough* Suburban *cough* does the same thing. I jsut figured there was something wrong with the float. Once the dealer gets done fixing it (I've not taken it in yet) I'll let you know.

bad connection. the sender wire may be opening up when hitting bumps, etc, or there is corrosion in the connections. i doubt a mechanical malfunction (sender float, etc) given that you say when you shut it down and turn it back on, it fixes itself.

dont forget that the signal goes through the anti-slosh module before hitting the gauge.

good luck.
