What does a full tune up consist of? Im getting around 12 mpg every fill up Granted, I don't keep my foot out of it, but I really dont drive it too aggressively now, just the occassional romp. I drive a lot and freaking filling up like every other day is starting to get expensive.

Basically new spark plugs, new Distributor cap, new wires, oil and trans fluids changed, new oil, air, and trans filter (if aplicable) replaced. tires rotated, air pressures adjusted, various axles, ball joints, bearings, linkages, ect. greased, radiator flush, oxygen sensors replaced, fuel injectors cleaned, belts/chains replaced if necessary, differential lubricant changed, MAF sensor wires cleaned, and so on just to name most of the key things.

65Shelby, do your drive highway miles or city? Since Honolulu is one big traffic jam all day, I am getting about 180-200 a tank...I would LOVE to get the mileage you do.

I would say about 60% highway, 30% canyon/twisty road, and 10% actual stop-n-go city. Best I ever got with the stock engine was 24mpg, but the new cam really sucks below 2k with 2.73s so I'm in 4th gear alot more.

If all you do is drive in the city(and I cant imagine much highway driving in Hawaii), then you could do mileage mods like underdrives, electric fan, gears, etc....or commute in a 40mpg Civic like I do.

running 87 gas in a 5.0 HO is the dumbest thing ive ever heard, every time i even thought of putting that crap in my 5.0, my car started pinging and backfiring. i dont care what ppl say, i only put 93 in my stang. with 93 gas i get way better response time, and mpg and with the 87, all it does is clog fuel injectors and filters.

You got it backward there guy. Either clean out the carbon or get your timing back below 14*. 93 is a waste on a 9:1 compression 302. I run 87 in my 9.8:1 engine with 12* and no pinging. Like has already been said, there is something wrong if you need 93 in a stock longblock. Bet OPEC loves you.

I know this thread is kinda old already, but i found bringing my timing back down to 12 from 15, along with less balls out shifting gave, un-believably, 45 extra miles. Is it the timing or my driving?

Ah, why does advancing the timing eat more gas? I thought it only affected when the spark fired?

Increased timing will require higher octane gas unless there are those who like pinging!

With the equal length shorties, your 02 sensors are effectively farther down the exhaust flow. This could produce an inaccurate reading bu your sensors resulting in your computer richening the mixture. This is a problem with long tubes, I just wonder if it translates to equal length shorties.
