Gas or water in my upper intake. What The F##K

Hey guys. A week or so ago I removed my upper intake to paint it, and there was some water or gas in it. I'm not talking a drop or two, I'm talking quite a bit. It didn't smell like gas, but it had an oily sheen to it and was clear. Anyway, I dumped it out, and continued doing what I was doing. Now every time I start the car, it bogs for a few seconds, and if I throttle up, I get a popping sound in the intake, like a backfire. What the hell is going on? All gaskets are good, no vac leaks anywhere, I already checked all that. How could gas even get into the upper intake?

If it didn't smell like gas it most likely is water, the oily sheen is from the inside of the intake.

Check the gasket at the TB/EGR spacer

My EGR isn't hooked up to the coolant lines, so it's not that. I think maybe it could be from my fenderwell CAI, we had alot of rain around here, and I think maybe the CAI was sucking water up into the intake. Does that sound reasonable?

If coolant lines are not hooked up then that is the only place you could get water in the upper, but seems strange..might want to check the AFPR see if maybe diaphram has blown out.

AFPR is fine, fuel pressure stays constant. I think the CAI was sucking water in, I like to hit puddles, and if you lay under the front passenger side, you can look up and see the giant conical air filter just sitting there. I'm pretty sure it wasn't gas, because it didn't smell like gas.

Stay away from those puddles... if you catch a good one... you can really mess up your engine.

Either from the air filter or a head gasket leak. There is a tube from the filler side of the valve covers into the TB. Any water in the oil will work its way into the intake. Check the oil to make sure it is not looking like a milkshake.

I know my head gaskets are still OK because I recently did a compression test. I think it's the puddles, I hit them on purpose, it's fun, but trust me, I'll be dodging from now on, and I might try and find a way to shield the filter. Matt- I need to order a part from you. I emailed you a week ago. I need the adapters to mount SN95 brake calipers on my 87 GT, I'm doing a 5 lug. Let me know please.

You might want to take some gutter flashing and build a shield of some sort that will keep splashed water off of the air filter.
