Gas smell

While the car is idling or i shut the engine off, i can smell strong gas fumes coming from under the car. Any suggestions on what the problem is? I was thinking the exhaust is leaking some where, wouldnt the CEL light come on if that was the case? What can i check?

Check the filler neck on the gas tank. They commonly deteriorate and leak. When you get gas, check the ground for leakage from the filler neck.

check the connections to the fuel filter...could be loose

I will check that and see what happens, because i have noticed i dont get the same mileage with a full tank of gas anymore.
