My gas tank makes a banging noise from inside when my Stang shakes side to side. Does this mean the spot-welded pan for the pickup is loose? Also, if I need to change the tank out should I cange the pickup and pump as well?
I have a stock 88 5.0 with 89,000 miles. Stock pump or upgrade now for future mods?

your tailpipes are probably hitting your tank..check it out, get back to us. Look for burn marks or scuffs

Make sure the straps that hold your tank are tight.

Just came from under the Stang. The banging is coming directly from inside the tank. Tailpipes fine. Everything is tight. Nothing is hitting the tank itself.
Stang runs fine. Inlet tube is tight. Nothing is loose.

Sounds like your baffles might be hosed. There is a little metal 'room' in there where the fuel pump inlet sits. It helps when cornering and fuel is shifting to one side or the other, this helps keep fuel in the compartment were the fuel pump inlet is.

Take the fuel pump out and see if anything is rattling. This happened to my bro and he had to buy a new tank.

most gas tanks have baffles in them (inside them) - the baffles kind of isolate the gas, so when you corner, you dont have 15 gallons sloshing hard back and forth (for those of you who have had a waterbed w/o baffles, vs one with baffles, you understand the dynamics).
baffle could have come loose.

good luck.

Ah! Broken baffles. Sounds like fun. So I got to change the tank. I think I'll be safe and change the pickup and pump as well.
Thanks guys!
