i was wondering what kind of experiences people have had with removing the drop-in gas tanks from these 'ol stangs. easy, not easy? i've got a 68 fastback and the tank has a bit of bad gas along with a plethora of addatives and such and i just wanna drain it. unfortunately it doesn't have a drain plug, and i'm not sure if it's safe to drill a hole in and fabricate a plug.

tell me what you guys think is the best idea, and how to remove the tank.

p.s. if anyone knows how to open a trunk (don't have the key) without calling a locksmith, you could help me out there too. thanks guys

The tank is very easy to remove if you can get into the trunk. When i bought my 70 i had to remove the rear seatand crawl into the trunk, empty beer cans and all left from the previous owner, to open it, then replace the lock tumbler. You may have to do this. Take a look at how the lock tumbler attaches on someone else's mustang so that you are familiar with how to remove it before you go crawling into the trunk. once the lock cylinder is removed the trunk can be openned with a flat head screw driver.

i just removed my gas tank from my 66 coupe. it was very easy, although i have a drain plug. we just removed a couple of bolts and the fuel line and sender line thing and it pulled right out. we are going to put a fuel cell in instead. does anyone know of a good, cheap fuel cell?

what about a fuel cell from R.J.S., they got them for under 200 for a 15 gallon i think. or am i missing something else that i have to buy?

my gas tank was easy (67 coupe). it did have a plug but there was so little gas that i didn't even bother draining. i just disconnected the sender, and gas line and the bolts... then its just like is bench pressing it out from under the car. (if its stuck in there like mine was). if its stuck its best that when you finally "bench press" it out that someone grabs it from you.

Whoa!!!!!!!! Don't be drilling any holes in a gas tank, worst yet, an empty one! Explosive gases can linger inside a gas tank for years! If you're intent in drilling, have a qualified shop who work on gas tanks do the work, they can do it the right way!

second that NO DRILLING!! if there is alot of gas, then there are those cheap siphon pumps to drain it. if anything, a twelve pack and a couple of buds.(friends that is)

hey i just bought a gas tank for 79 $ it was great it was so easy it took longer to get the old gas out i went through the filler neck with a pump and got most of the gas out then i used a plug on the sending unit ans rasied it out there was a little gas in there but it was ok i used a good silicone under the new tank it so easy got a new trunk mate down and now the trunk is done !!
