Gauge suggestions??

I just ordered the radio panel that holds three 2 1/16th gauges for my GT. I know for sure I am going to put in a mechanical oil psi and mechanical temp gauge. Any suggestions on another usefull gauge for the other spot?? I was thinking the of putting in a voltage gauge, but I don't run any stereo equipment or electric fans, so if there is a gauge I could get more use out of I would go that way.

Agree'd. Then mount a Fuel PSI out on your hood. Those things come in handy.

One other option is a vac gauge for your SD car. I have one in the 88 since vac signal is so important.

The voltmeter in my fox is not as inaccurate as the other gauges so I see your line of thinking James.

I did Water temp, oil temp, trans temp(its auto). I have a small electric fan on my trans cooler so the trans temp gauge comes in handy if things get a little warm......

Do you plan on running boost or laughing gas? If not, I personally would run voltage. Why replace the other two stock gauges with more accurate ones and not do the third? Thats just my way of thinking. Chances are the voltage gauge is also innacurate and an upgrade could pinpoint an over/under charging issue in the future.

Nah my car will never see boost or nitrous. I k now the voltage gauge is important. Heck my stocker registers in the red unless I smack the gauge so I should probably get one, but I was kinda leaning twoards a vaccum gauge like Hisssin suggested since I am still SD.

We can think of a lot of cool gauges - how about a trans temp gauge? It kinda sounds like a voltmeter would be cool though. Uh oh, you need to find a place for more gauges.

ill give my usual... i stoped goin with mechanical guages because i as drivin my old mans car a while back and the oil temp line broke and my crotch then became the temp guage and the oil as hot.... just my 2 cents

I run a tach, oil pressure, oil temp, trans temp, volts, fuel pressure. I also have a Nitrous pressure gauge but that in the trunk.

That bothers me too, but I really want the full sweep of a mechanical gauge.

Not in this day and age. I am like James in that I prefer mech gauges just for the full sweep as well (and you dont get that twitchyness that can come with elec gauges). Another gripe I have is that the needle width on an elec temp gauge can be worth a fair number of degrees, and any slight miscalibration can really affect the reading. With that said, I run a mix of gauges (mech and elec) in each car.

So said simply, go with you want - both will be accurate.

I would go with Mechanical oil and water as well. I have never had an issue with either and I have been running them for the last 15 years or better.

I like the idea of the water gauge not needing any power for it to work. You can look at it at any time and get exactly what it is reading. (Kind of like sticking a thermometer in the intake.)

I also like the full sweep as well.

Also, as far as the oil gauge goes, I always use the $9 copper tubing kit and it has worked well for me. Some get a little chatter in the line but there are ways to quiet it.

Yeah not having the gauges rely on the cars electrical system is what made me want mechanical. I had oil press. and water temp. electric gauges on my A-pilliar before and didn't really like them mounted there. Plus as Hissin said just the width of the needle was 10-15 psi so they are harder to read. And if the electrical system in the car isn't in top shape it can skew the reading of the gauges. I like that the phantom gauge I plan to use on this install just reads in 2 digit incriments for the oil press. so you can easily tell EXACTLY what the pressure is.

Thanks, now I just need to pick out a good CD player to install at the same time. Almost hate to see my factory stereo go. Where am I gonna play my cassette tapes at now???????
