I'm thinking about getting some 3.55 gears for my 93 Cobra and was wondering what the going rate for gears, installation, and speedo recalibration runs these days?

Are there any recommended shops for getting this done? Seattle area is preferred but I wouldn't have a problem doing a road trip down to Vancouver, or even Portland, if the price is right at a competent shop.

Thanks!

I would call All Ford Performance in Vancouver. Most likely the best rates around and from experience very good qaulity work.

Correct me if i'm mistaken, but you like in Kirkland/Bellevue right? gears are a pretty straightforward install, and don't cost much maybe 100-150 labor....I'd save a 2.5+hr roadtrip for something a little more technical, ya know?!

I guess it depends on what you call straightforward. I think if it was truly straightforward then more people would do it themselves, but it seems like a lot of people have gears installed by a professional shop.

I've heard several horror stories of improperly installed gears, so I want to get it done right the first time by a shop that has a good reputation and stands behind their work. For me, it's worth it...

Here's the deal, there are a lot of people that think it's easy, these are the same people that use the same shims they took out on the new gears. While this works and the car will go down the road, you're more likely to be buying new gears and a professional install just a few months of hard driving later or a few years if you go easy on it; but you'll be in the shop sooner than that to get rid of the whine. The problem is, when it comes to shims that are 1/1000 of an inch, there might be some adjustments that need attending, otherwise they would have shims that are 1/8" thick.

Most people just don't have the tools necessary to properly setup gears. You can rent the tools at most parts stores, but then you run the risk of improperly using them.

Unless you are positive you know what you are doing, or you have plenty of money and time to burn, I don't suggest installing gears or any other parts yourself.

from what I've heard, AFP is the best in the portland metro area when it comes to anything stang.

I get my trouble parts installed at my uncles shop in Albany, and if he didn't just build Factory 5 Shelby Cobra replica's I would recomend him.

Here's the other thing, if you go to a reputable shop, no matter who it is, they will most likely have a warrenty. If you go buy the gears and have a shop install them, they may cover any problems down the road with the installation. But, if your gears throw a tooth or have a hairline fracture from the factory, you're SOL. If you're going to go with a shop, let them get the parts, they will probably include parts they buy in their warrenty.

Good Luck!

Northwest Differential 425 827 2868~ Next to the Ford dealer in Totem Lake. They put in a set of 3.55 gear for me years ago on my last Mustang. I wish you could get gear put on for less then $500 labor only around Seattle or the Eastside.

I disagree with this completely. As I've said in threads before, I probably could have done my own gears (I've done dana 44/60s before ), but I've chosen AFP for two of my cars, and I paid for some peace of mind knowing someone more experienced was doing it, and it's guaranteed. With something as critical as your rear end, you don't want to roll the dice like that. Breakage is always expensive, and could also risk the safety of you and others.

BTW, after about 6 months of hard driving, you still can't tell my gears from stock ones just by listening

Another vote for AFP.You could also give krazykoncepts a call out in gresham. They are both top notch and you can't go wrong with either shop.

I can not say anything for it would be considered solicitation. You guys are free to say what you want. Maybe Bill, Bart(loud 95) or even you Jeff can let people know. PM me if anyone has questions.

Okay, here it is in a nut shell: Paul Brady has sold Krazy Koncepts to ASD. Jon is still with the company. Some things are going to change initially. KK will now offer e-commerce and on site sales. Likewise, the installation services formerly offered will be unavailable for a period of time. I believe tuning will still be available. In time, KK will again be a full service shop. Anything I left out, ASD?

Ah, thats a different version of what I heard. I heard Allen bought Jon and was going to have him permenately installed in his center console.

But in all seriousness, congratulations guys! I am glad to see the company in the hands of ASD as I know it will keep our friendly rivalry alive and maybe even step it up a bit.
