To ad a footnote here: Gas mileage was also a big concern for me in installing gears because my Stang is a daily driver. With the added RPM's I figured my mileage would suffer some. It hasn't. I just drove 280 miles through the mountains of West Virginia this weekend, and some of if at speeds under 30 mph because of the snow, and I got 23 mpg on the trip. Even though the RPM's are up with the gears, you will find you use A LOT less pedal in day to day driving and on the highway. My BEST mod just keeps getting better and better!!!!
gears are hands down the best mod you can do with the reasonable chance of paying $300 for parts and install. I paid $200 parts and did it myself, with the advice of a good friend. It's a little overwhelming at first if you have never seen internals on a rear but dont fear the gear. Have a guide go step by step and keep it as simple as possible and be prepared to spend a while on the carrier shims if you're going with a steep gear, the pinion will not likely be too much trouble, and if it is, have an air chisel handy to remove the bearing if you dont have a seperator or a presss handy. It is more complicated than some seem to believe, but like I said, keep it simple (you're just trying to make two gears properly mesh) and you will be fine. 4-9 hours depending on experience and availability of tools.
oh, yeah feels like a 40-60 hp gain, slight difference in gas mileage only because I drive round trip freeway 60 miles per day @70 mph but in town couldnt be better. All the cars that you used to hang with, pull a little on, or get pulled on, will now (within reason) be seeing your taillights. no it wont run with an LS1 from start to top speed but will be very close up to 75 or so. Full bolt on gt with gears cams and maybe some good porting will definately do the trick(PI heads).
Am I the only one that was disappointed after a gear swap?
I put some 4.10’s in my 03 GT and was expecting a lot more feel out of it
I did get the best gas mileage ever after the swap...Half my ride to work is 70mph highway, the other half is stop and go through town.. I was getting just over 19mpg, my last tank got over 21mpg using my 91 octane SCT tune with the 4.10's.....go figure
Don't get me wrong, the price was well worth it, and it was better, just not what I had hoped...Stupid 4.6s have no grunt
The 315's help a lot, I think there would be a bit of tire spin with a stock sized tire
the greatest thing i have experienced from having 3.73's is my passenger asking me what gear im in and i tell him fifth and he says fifth pulls this hard? brings a smile to my face everytime i think of that. im sure the 351w with all the trimmings had a little to do with it aswell
