Gears: Which should I get?

Hey guys, I don't really know much about gears, except for the fact that my stock ones suck. The whole car is stock (96 GT 5-speed), so I was wondering which gears (ratio and brand) I should get, what kind of differences I'm going to see when I get them installed, and what other things I may have to modify by getting new gears (i.e. cpu chip? etc.). Also if you have a good place where I could order them and how much this project will set me back. Thanks fellas.

I know its a popular topic, but I've looked through the other posts and its difficult to get a coherent explanation, especially since I really have no background knowledge on the topic. Plus it would probably take me all day to look through the posts for answers to all of my questions, it seems like people with a 5-speed suggest 3.73's, but so far that's really all I have learned. Plus, everyone on here has a different setup for their car, diff mods, diff years, etc. It just seemed like writing my own post would be more productive and I would get all the answers I need. So if anyone would be willing to help, that would be greatly appreciated.

The Short, short version

From what i've seen...(Stangnet user's suggestions)

Most of the 5 spd owners who plan on keeping their cars naturaly aspirated (N/A) will go with the 4:10s. Those of use who are planning on doing the boost in one form or another (blown, charged, or NOS) usually choose the 3:73's
Any other info can be found using the search.

Hope this helps :nice:

Got both 4.10s and 3.73s and honestly feel that, for a daily driver, the 3.73s are better. If you have an auto, then I'd go 4.10s. If you head to the track once a month and run drag radials, 4.10s. With the 3.73s I can finesse the throttle and barely spin...then I am gone.
Insist on FRPP...Ford Racing Performance Parts - when buying gears!

gears are best mod i've done to my 01. but which ones to get kinda depends on what u have now.

not sure with a 96? i believe some stangs have like 2.73s in them stock. i gave my old 3.27s to a guy with 2.73s and he loves em.

i'd say no < 3.27s or no > 3.73s for a 96. but that's just my 2 pennies.

u can prob. find a good set of stock 3.27s out of a 99+ gt for very little $

btw, u will need a new speedo gear. install for gears is around 150-250ish.

We need to make a sticky thread in which the best posts concerning gears are included. This way, people could easily analyze the situation without a great deal of questions.

The 96-98 GT's didnt have the powerband the 99-04 GT's have. You also stated you have a five speed. Therefore, I would probably advise you to go with 3.73s. However, I could be wrong. Here is the link to a performance gear calculator that should help in making the decision. Good Luck.

The only thing I disagree with here is the 3.27 part. I dont feel ANY GT with performance in mind should be using 3.27's. 3.55-3.90 sounds about right for this guy.

yeah. me either.

but big diff. between paying 175 bucks for 3.55s and getting a barely used set of 3.27s for 50 bucks or something. either would be a big jump if u are going from 2.73s. just trying to lay out some cheap alternatives. :nice:
