i am ready to get a cam. i have a '65 289. i currently have performer intake, holley carb, and msd ignition, and flowmasters.

..im looking for:
- little choppy idle (not TOO MUCH!!)
- low-mid range power
- will be a daily driver

...feel free to shoot as much knowledge and options you guys want!!

I just picked up a CompCams XE262H to swap in place of my 280H (waaay big) off of the recommendation from a friend that is a Mustang owner as well as a salesman at the local speed shop.

Looking forward to less chop and more go down low.

Don't make the mistake I did and go too big on the cam if you want to daily drive it. 8mpg - it screams up top but suffers everywhere else... sure did sound awesome though. :)

What type of cam will work with my engine??
-hydraulic flat tappet
-hydraulic roller
-mechanical flat tappet
-mechanical roller

For a daily driver you most likely want a hydraulic flat tappet.

The differences are all in the lifters.

The roller cams require special retrofitting onto your block to work but have the advantage of less friction.

The mechanical (solid) cams are able to perform more reliably at higher rpms but have the side affect of being a bit more noisy and requiring a bit more maintenance than the hydraulic cams.

That's all I got. :)
