Getting rid of the X-Pipe raspiness! Baffles are the answer!

-I posted this over in the SVT forum, but figured you guys might like to know too.-

My car was way way too loud. I've got an M55 3" catback and O/R X and it was really really raspy and really really really incredibly *****ing loud, so loud that I got a ticket for it a couple of weeks ago.

After searching around I found the answer in the form of some 3" Bassani baffles. They just came in and I installed them last night. The difference is dramatic! No more rasp, and the volume has been cut down about 30%, which means that my car is still LOUD, but its not eardrum splitting, blood coming out of your ears obnoxiously loud, and they really smoothed out the tone of the exhaust too. There is no more high pitched rasp, just a smooth aggressive tone. It sounds perfect now!

The best part is that because they simply fit into the end of the tailpipes you can remove them if you want to go to the track and scare babies and they don't reduce the performance gain you get from going with O/R pipes.

NOTE: I'm not posting this to start an O/R vs cats or X vs H debate just to share some info.

I would imagine he got the 3" Bassani baffles from Bassani. I dunno dude, tough call.

Seems kind of silly to me to spend the money to put on a free flowing exhaust only to restrict it with baffles. I tried them when I first got my Magnaflow catback in the hopes of quieting the drone at 2K. I drove around with them for a couple of days, took them out and sold them to someone else.

gotta look at his combo to understand, a magnaflow catback by itself is already quiet..add an o/r x-pipe and its loud, his combo was probly rediculous..at his point i could understand wanted a little mufflage. I already have to keep it under 2k rpms when a cop is near or that harrass me

I understand his setup just fine. If the sound is the only thing he is worried about I guess the baffles will do the trick. I just can't see spending the money to open up the exhaust and then plug it with baffles. The baffles will negate a lot of the gains from the off road X. Look at the pic of mine below. See how much narrower the baffle is in the middle, tell me that is not restricing flow. If the sound is that much of a problem I would go with a catted X rather than use baffles.

o/r x and magnaflows dumped are only loud when you want them to be...dont know what you guys think is loud, but i think an x with race bullets is it

From memory I would estimate that the baffle reduces the inner diameter of the exhaust (at the tip) from 3" to about 2.5", which also happens to be the size of tubing used for most aftermarket catbacks so there is no "restriction" going on per se. My xpipe is 2.5", the catback is 3", so the effective choke point is going to be the upstream X, not the baffle.

Although if for some reason you think that putting a 3.5-4" tip onto a 2.5" tube somehow increases exhaust flow then I'm afraid you should have bought a Honda.

Because an o/r X with baffles is still cheaper than a catted-X, plus you can take the baffles out.

Since we are going on memory and estimating here I said what I did based on my memory of the reduction in the inner diameter being less than 2.5.

Darn, I should have kept mine I probably could have gotten twice what I paid for them from you guys.
