I am going for a Transgo shift kit for my 1990 aod mustang. How exactly does the shift kit work on an aod, what it does is provide quicker and harder shifts? It says it "Manually holds 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to any RPM" how would I be able to hold the transmission to a certain rpm without a stall converter? Just a few questions before it is put in the car.
ok, the holding any gear crap, is just that, crap. it does not.
if you DO NOT install the "Hi-Rev" governor kit as well, it will increase your shifts to about 5500 1-2, and 4800-5000 2-3 automatically at WOT.
also, if you have 3.73 or lower gears, contact transgo about the hi speed mod for deep gears, this will save you time later.
definately install the blue hard shift spring. i did not, and mine shifts firm, but would not even bark a tire. you want teh blue spring, especially if you ever plan on a high stall converter.
if your doing this yoursealf, read the instruction, be comfortable with em before you start. then, take your time, if you drill the vb worng, it is garbage.
keep it clean. expect 4 hours to do the install once the vb is on the bench if you have never done it before.
use a damned torque wrench!!!!!!!!! most do not!!!!!!!!! most have an issue as a result, imho.......
90 inlbs is 7.5 ftlbs, and i do not know if a ftlb tq wrench that goes that low.......lol!
also, get a tailshaft gasket before you start, IF you plan to do the hi rev governor part of the kit (which i recommend if you have a 3.73 or lower gear!!!!!!!!!)
also, pick up the 1997 or later 2-3 accumulator piston from ford before you start!!!!!!!!
do it once, do it right.
good luck!
