I am going for a Transgo shift kit for my 1990 aod mustang. How exactly does the shift kit work on an aod, what it does is provide quicker and harder shifts? It says it "Manually holds 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to any RPM" how would I be able to hold the transmission to a certain rpm without a stall converter? Just a few questions before it is put in the car.

here you go

luckily i did a t-5 swap so i avoided this whole thing, and actually to some point i wish i had kept the AOD (i'm lazy and i like to get drunk, etc). But u can manually hold the RPM's by keeping wide open throttle (The gas all the way on the floor) with each gear, depening on which gear, also the shift kit holds to a higher RPM, instead of 4,500 or w/e, it holds 1000 extra RPMS with the shift kit, and yes it ****s more crips....and better

Oh yeah another thing, It says there is two settings for the shifts mild or hard shifts and I am going with hard shifts but can It easily be changed or what? And for installation do I need anything else or just the shift kit is good?

ok, first response.....made zero sense to me. glad you understood it!

anyway

ok, the holding any gear crap, is just that, crap. it does not.

if you DO NOT install the "Hi-Rev" governor kit as well, it will increase your shifts to about 5500 1-2, and 4800-5000 2-3 automatically at WOT.

also, if you have 3.73 or lower gears, contact transgo about the hi speed mod for deep gears, this will save you time later.

definately install the blue hard shift spring. i did not, and mine shifts firm, but would not even bark a tire. you want teh blue spring, especially if you ever plan on a high stall converter.

if your doing this yoursealf, read the instruction, be comfortable with em before you start. then, take your time, if you drill the vb worng, it is garbage.

keep it clean. expect 4 hours to do the install once the vb is on the bench if you have never done it before.

use a damned torque wrench!!!!!!!!! most do not!!!!!!!!! most have an issue as a result, imho.......
90 inlbs is 7.5 ftlbs, and i do not know if a ftlb tq wrench that goes that low.......lol!

also, get a tailshaft gasket before you start, IF you plan to do the hi rev governor part of the kit (which i recommend if you have a 3.73 or lower gear!!!!!!!!!)

also, pick up the 1997 or later 2-3 accumulator piston from ford before you start!!!!!!!!

do it once, do it right.

good luck!

I am actually for once not doing the work on my car, having a garage that always is working on drag cars etc and know what they are doing. I have 4.10s in my car which they also installed and was quick and had no problems. So you would recommend not putting in the hi-rev governer with 4.10s eh

YES I would!

also, once again, ABSOLUTLY call transgo's tech line, tell them

"I have your shift kit installed, and 4.10 gears, and my car goes into OD even with the selecter in drive, what can I do about it?"

seriously, that will eliminate alot of sensless talk with the tech.........they will send you the instructions to eliminate this problem before it exists. and it will exist...

good luck!!!!!!!!

hey nosmatt, i'm sorry you cant read english. The information i was giving him about holding the kit enabling the shifts to be held to any point, and actually making it shift better, etc. ARE FROM MUSCLEMUSTANGS&FASTFORDS Install i read online. They installed a transgo shift kit and i went back to that article and told him what i read, i'm not pulling this out of my butt, how about some respect?

I installed it a few days ago.. I really like it. At moderate throttle, it shift 1-2 at about 1000 rpm higher, and the same on 2-3 and 3-4. If you punch it, like matt said, it shifts way up in the powerband. Definately use the firmer springs. My AOD was weak, and now if I half way romp on it from a stop, it'll bark second pretty good... It doesn't snap your neck like my C4, but it's definately worth the $80.. I did mine myself, had never messed with a valve body before (have rebuilt engines etc), and I did the actual valve changes in about 3 hours, taking my time, with no video. Worst part, dang AOD holds 12 quarts of fluid, and I only had 8 here, had to drive the grocery getter to Autozone real quick to try it out.. What does a shop charge to do the install?

sorry there custom89............ was not flamin ya for posting what you read rather than experienced, not at all.................I was having a hard time understanding what was typed!

no flame intended...........but i literally meant, that if he understood your post (which judging by his response, he did) good, cuz i did not.

maybe my english taint so good...........

and last thought, Ourobos, make sure that thing is not overfilled!
an aod will actually NOT hold 12 quarts, unless completely empty, converter and lines, and cooler .......a valve body install should take MAYBE 6 qts......more likely 5.

YMMV
