Going for 14's

I know, I know, not that impressive of a feat at all, but I'm looking to get to low 14's by the end of the summer, maybe a 14.3 or 14.4. I'm working with a 98, NPI, automatic GT, so I think low 14's would be decent for now. The mods I have right now are 3.73's, k&n intake, mac o/r h, flowmaster catback, and pi intake. Do you guys think I could hit low 14's with my setup right now, or what other cheap things could I do? I'm going to supercharge it soon and I don't want to waste my money on small things, but if I had a low 14 second car I would be happy for now. I was thinking if this current setup can't hit low 14's, an SCT XCAL2 would be in order, but I'm not sure on that yet. Any ideas, input would be appreciated.

I would put on some subframe connecters now before you twist the body all to hell, and get some moser axles with some sticky tires. You should be able to hit 14's no problem with some good sticky rubber.

I wouldn't say not to buy a stock car. A completely stock car in nice shape, will many times get more money than a modded one...

I'm not too worried about "twisting the body all to hell" with all 190 rwhp I have I know I could do suspension, but what I plan on doing is getting a mongoose kit later on this year, and then next year getting a complete maximum motor sports suspension package, instead of piecing together everything. Maybe I'll even get the suspension first, I'm still planning everything out. I'd just rather save up and do everything together, the right way. Also, I don't want something that can just hit 14's once with slicks at the tracks, I would prefer low 14's in daily driver trim (no spare, nothing in the truck, usually less than half of a tank of gas). What do you think I could hit right now with 275's out back and a decent launch?

One good hard launch is all it takes to twist up the car. You won't notice it at first, but over time your hood will not line up with the fenders, and your doors will not open and shut correctly. I have seen it happen on 100% bone stock cars at the track. Subframes were the first couple of mods I did to the car. My first trip to the track I hit a 14.0. I had 4:10 gears though. I think maybe you could use an intake plenum and throttlebody to help the car breathe a bit better

I would guess around 14.6-14.7. But there is only one way to know. Take it to the track.

Some guy hit a 14.7 with just a midpipe on here, I think his name is red98gt, so I would hope for at least a 14.6-14.5

I say with an auto a very good mod for you is definitely a handheld tuner/ sct xcal 2. It will bring the car to life with the ability to adjust the shift points and of course you'll have firmer shifts as well. I'd say thats a must-do mod for an auto. Also, a nice stall/torque converter combo would help TONS. An tuned auto with a better stall/converter and some good gears (4.10's) will out-launch and out run a 5speed consistently.

Well I'm going to get the xcal 2 hopefully in a couple of weeks, I just need to fix a couple small problems before I continue modding. I guess the consensus is I'd run mid-high 14's right now, which isn't too bad, but I plan to go to the track in august and see how I'll do.

my friend had a '98 gt 5-speed w/ frpp shorty headers, bassani o/r x, flowmaster 40 series 2-chambers, a frpp 70mm throttle body and a k&n w/ stock gearing and it was enough for him to run alot of higher powered cars!! He ran a similar npi gt with similar mods although it was an automatic w/ a shift kit and he said the guy ran pretty close w/ him although my friend beat him. A higher stall would definitely help you out and heck man if you're a good enough driver you might even dip into the 13's!!??? (why not?) btw what would it take for a 94-95 sn95 gt w/ a killer driver to get into the 13's? could you do it w/ stock gears?

I don't think 13's, that's far from a dream right now, but low 14's I would like. No idea about the stock 94/95 though, no experience with the 5.0

I also believe that mid 14s would also be the right guess. I pulled low 14s my first time out (ever) in my manual NPI GT, and like you have some PI components and minimal mods overall. The auto in your stang, while taking away a few ponies should make up the time in quicker shifter - I granny shifted. Let us know how you do and good luck. It's really fun!

We have similar mods, but you have a couple bolt ons that I don't have like U/D pullys and an aftermarket plenum, plus the built 4r70w with the 3200 stall. 13.94 is an awesome time in an automatic npi gt though!
