Im going insane crapola . I cant find out why my car will out of the blue have a huge backfire spudder and just die in the middle of the street. If i give it gas while this happens and try to keep it alive i just get smaller backfires after backfire and i just shut it off. I have to let it sit 10 mins and then it will run fine again.

Things ive done since ive owned it,which is since this problem has been occuring.

New msd 6a ignition

new msd cap/rotor/wires/coil

new plugs

new ect

new act

new o2's

new ford 24lb injectors

new #24 76mm maf

new a9L

new fuel injector harness

I even took it to the local ford speed shop and had them put it on the dyno and tune it- timing advance 14 degrees/ FP is set at 38

Pulled codes all i get is 31-85. the egr and canister are removed so nothing suprising

Can i just sum it up as a short in some god forsaken wire or am i overlooking something???? Im at my wits end, im either going to

a) blow it up

b) Sell it, but i dont wanna rip some poor bastard off

c) Rip out all the electro crap and go carb

Next time it dies.

Next time listen for your pump. open your ignition and listen for your fuel pump. I had a problem where my ride would just buck once or twice and die, pull over and wouldn't start. Wait 5-10 minutes and fire right back up like nothing happened. Turned out to be a bad fuel pump.

I must admit the added backfire part does sound more like a TFI issue, but it doesn't hurt to listen.

Good luck.

sounds like a problem a buddy of mine had once. Is it running really rich??? Anyway my buddy chased this problem for over a year, had the engine rebuilt......and changed every thing anyone could possibly dream up....then it would up being a ground on the wiring harness AT the computer behind the kick panel. The screw was stripped (and not tight) so sometimes it would ground properly and others it wouldnt! Would run for sometimes hours with no problems then, for no reason just die!

trace out and make sure ALL of you wiring harness GROUNDS are grounded good and tight. This may just solve your problem.

2nd choice would be TFI module!
good luck

I vote for the tfi, and or, the computer ground. The backfiring sounds like ignition going off and then back on, at slightly the wrong time.

I just went through some of this on my 89 LX 2.3, and still have occasional stalling when cold starting.

I fried the computer trying to diagnose it.

It turned out that it was all started by a dead MAP sensor, but it did not throw that code until after I killed the puter and replaced it.

Well, to reply to some of you guys post asking specifics.

its always on acceleration. and then bam! big backfire and the car either

A) completey dies, i pull over and IF i try to start it it'll just sputter, pop, and just wont stay on

or

b) big backfire, almost die i'd say 200 RPMS. i'll put the clutch in and try to keep it alive and its just constant small backfires which leds to bucking if i release the clutch and try to get in a parking lot etc.

I have to wait around 10 mins almost as if its just randomly flooding itself with gas then i have to let it clear out.

I thought it was a short on the fuel injector harness because the original one looked rough but i replaced it with the new injectors and didnt do anything.

So TFI would cause this? i'll buy one a new one just for ****s and giggles. and i'll try a new BAP sensor aswell but im leaning towards a short or loose ground.

Thanks for the help, i appreciate it
